Gasthaus Zum Kleinen Semmering — Restaurant in Gemeinde Altenmarkt an der Triesting

Traditional Austrian fare, done amazingly well. The service is not the speediest, but you're paying for that "down home feel," only "home" is the Austrian countryside. One of the old customs being gradually discarded here is that when someone enters a public space, they greet the room and are greeted in turn. This custom DEFINITELY still persists in this restaurant.

As far as cuisine, this is where the locals come to eat. Light and fluffy schnitzel (vs. schnitzel that has been soaking in fryer fat), excellent egg- or- cheese casserole (eier- or kaesespaetzle). Always wild game on the menu -- well, ok, game, I'm pretty sure deer and boar are mostly farmed nowadays. I've been there a handful of times with my husband and have yet to find something I didn't enjoy. ...

Definitely a nice place and service but I think that this place serves the smallest "grill plate" I have ever seen. Paying over €11 for a few bits of meat and a tiny portion of French fries was underwhelming and disappointing. So much so, I was still hungry after eating my "main course" . Unfassbar unfreundlich! Nach 6 Stunden Wandern kamen wir am Ostersonntag gegen 16:30 Uhr völlig durchnässt im Tal an. Direkt am Eingang des Restaurants stand ein Kühlschrank mit Getränken – ohne jeglichen Hinweis, dass keine Selbstbedienung erlaubt sei. Wir schnappten uns zwei Wasserflaschen (man sieht uns ja wohl an, dass wir gerade vom Wandern kommen), in der Hoffnung, einfach schnell etwas zu trinken zu bekommen.

Statt einem freundlichen Empfang wurden wir von einer sichtlich genervten kleinen, schlanken Dame mit kurzem, grauem Haar mit Kopfschütteln begrüßt – kein Hallo, kein Lächeln, nichts. Stattdessen schnauzte sie uns an, sie könne die Flaschen „wegen dem Pfand“ nicht bonnieren, und belehrte uns dann noch mit einem pampigen: „Wir sind kein Geschäft!“ Aha – aber einen Kühlschrank mit Getränken direkt beim Eingang hinstellen, ohne Hinweis, und dann Gäste maßregeln, die sich nach stundenlanger Wanderung einfach nur kurz erfrischen wollen?
