Waldschenke Staar — Restaurant in Gemeinde Mauerbach

This is my favorite place in Austria. My wife and I have gone here for 30+ years. They are now closed for the winter, but don’t miss this place in the Spring, Summer, or Fall. Each season brings you a unique experience, weather dependent, but outstanding. Inside is a beautiful dining room in classic wood farm style - all centered around the huge open fireplace where their famous roasted chicken cooks in front of you. Outside is an expansive dining garden, nestled in the woods and surrounded by beautiful views. Reservations are a must in the high summer and I would recommend them all year round. I’ve never had anything but great food, with the roasted chicken, lamb, and their chicken livers being my favorites. Lastly, this is a family owned place, and it tells. They get it, and I love that they’re all an inter generational family or have long experience with them. We’ve done it all there, wedding receptions, birthdays, anniversary celebrations and simply enjoy a few hours there at any chance we can. Also the drive up is one of the best parts of the experience. Just perfect in every way!! As a Brit who missed a traditional country pub with log fire I fell in love with this place instantly. It’s so cosy & homely and such an eye for detail in the decor. Food was delicious, grilled chicken straight off the spit roast. Lovely friendly staff who are very care taking and attentive and the wonderful landlady who personally comes round to all the tables to see if you are ok and chat with her guests. Just superb. This place has just sky rocketed to one of my favourite venues and I can’t wait to come back. Also beautiful homemade produce sold in a hut outside with an honesty box. Teuer, im Sinne von wirklich wenig Leistung für relativ viel Geld. Als ich mit meiner Frau zu Besuch war, haben wir nach unserem Gusto "frei fliegend" bestellt, ohne auf die Preise zu achten-ist ja schließlich nur ein Gasthaus im Wienerwald mit ein paar Bänken auf der Wiese. Also was soll schon passieren. Dann, als wir gezahlt haben, mussten wir im Anschluss aber doch um die Rechnung als Beweis bitten, ob das mit den EUR 75,00 für eine Suppe, eine Hühnerleber und ein Brathendl mit Rauschen (2 Beilagen, ein Bier, 2 Apfelsäfte, 2 Gebäck) stimmen kann. Und tatsächlich, es hat gestimmt!? Hühnerleber ohne jegliche Beilage EUR 19,00. Eine kleine flache Schüssel mit Erdäpfelsalat EUR 5,00, usw. Für die persönlichen Finanzen keine Krise, nur ist der Preis DORT absolut nicht gerechtfertigt, woanders mit anderer Aufmachung, gutem Service, gedeckten Tischen gerne. Denn es wurden falsche Getränke serviert, die Stelze war vorm Lokal als Lockvogel angeschrieben, war dann aber leider schon (wieder!) aus, das Personal kommt selten bis nicht vorbei und für Kinder gibts gar nichts, aber wirklich gar nichts. Auch wenn das Essen eigentlich ok war, passt das Paket absolut nicht. Ich empfehle einen großen Bogen um die Holzfäller-suppe zu machen, da schwimmen 3 aufgelöste Knoblauchzehen drin, das habe ich noch nie erlebt, da hauts den stärksten...
