Winery Nigl — Restaurant in Gemeinde Senftenberg

The hotel exceeded our expectations. The location is simply exquisite. From the sun terrace and pool, you can see the castle ruins atop the hill. The hotel is a great example of modern architecture. The restaurant and some rooms are located in an old farmhouse that has been beautifully renovated. The renovation was done with great respect for the original building. These old buildings are connected to a new building by a subterranean corridor. The new building is embedded into the vineyards, and its terraces mimic the vineyard terraces, allowing the building to blend into the surroundings without disturbing them. Very well done! The rooms are simple in a good way. Although good materials are used everywhere, the overall feeling is fresh and decent, without the unnecessary decadence sometimes found in more expensive hotels. The pool is small, more for bathing than swimming, but the entire pool area is lovely. Breakfast is really good. The restaurant itself is really cozy. The breakfast options are fine. Don't get me wrong; it's generally great. However, considering the price level of the hotel, we've had better breakfasts at Wachau wine hotels. I really liked meeting the owner at breakfast. This is precisely the personal touch that you cannot find even in a five-star hotel. In summary, the experience is one of continuity with respect to previous generations and the surrounding nature.

I think it's unfortunate that the pool closes so early. It would be manageable to keep it open until at least 9 p.m. We stayed in small hotels where the pool was open 24 hours. It's especially great to cool down in the pool before bed on such a hot summer day. Yes, it could disturb the other guests, but judging by the other guests (middle aged to older, decent ones), this probably won't be a frequent issue. A polite request to be quiet after 9 pm would...

This hotel is just shy of being great. If you’re Austrian this will be an excellent stay I am sure.

The hotel rooms are very modern and comfortable. The bed and sofa were comfortable and the patio has an amazing vide of the valley. The rooms are not air conditioned, which is to be expected in Austria, however the sheer volume of the restaurant makes it difficult to sleep at night if you open your window. Despite “quiet hours” for the hotel the restaurant had very loud crowds every night until midnight. The sound from the restaurant courtyard directs the sound at the hotel rooms. I’m glad those at the restaurant were having a good time, but we had to choose between hearing them drunkenly yell and laugh with the window open or overheating with the window closed.

The restaurant itself was just okay. The servers were friendly, but they did not explain any of the wines at this winery. The food to wine pairings didn’t seem to make sense to me. For the cost of dinner here for two people I would unfortunately say it is not worth the price. We had cordon bleu and schnitzel, expecting an elevated preparation for the cost, but it was indistinguishable from the same dishes available at any local tavern. The restaurant location and setting is very beautiful, however.

The spa is certainly excellent. The saunas and pool were very relaxing and the view from the pool elevates the experience.

On a final note, there is an honesty bar where you can grab a bottle of wine or two after the restaurant closes to enjoy in your room and bill to your account. We had to discover this while walking around, though, it was never explained during check in. It was a nice addition to have access to.

Vorab:|Ich beschäftige mich seit mehr als 10 Jahren intensiv mit Wein, mache 2-3 Weinreisen im Jahr und das Hotel Nigl (da man das Weingut ja kennt) stand schon mehrmals auf meiner Liste und nun war es endlich soweit. ||Zum Hotel:|Die Lage des Hotels in Senftenberg am Ortsanfang ist gut zu erreichen.|Das Hotel ist sehr modern, sehr sauber, Parkplätze tw. in Tiefgarage und im Freien. Unser Zimmer (Juniorsuite) war ausreichend groß mit Balkon/Terrasse. Das Hotel hat einen Fitnessraum sowie einen SPA Bereich mit Sauna und Pool (zwar klein, aber für die Größe des Hotels absolut ausreichend). Meinem Temperaturempfinden nach muss das Gebäude klimatisiert sein, wobei man von der Klimaanlage nichts mitbekommt (vermutlich Betonkernaktivierung). |Frühstück gibt's im Restaurant Nigl, welches sich im Stammhaus mit Innenhof befindet. |Zu beachten ist, dass man zum Abendessen im Restaurant reservieren muss. Wir haben am Anreisetag für den Folgetag reserviert und einen Platz bekommen, dieses Kunststück gelang uns aber nur einmal (unbedingt früh genug reservieren, sollte man hier auch was essen möchten, es gibt in Senftenberg keine Ausweichmöglichkeit). |Resümee Hotel: |Schönes, modernes, gepflegtes Hotel, wirkt aber etwas steril und ohne Seele.|Meinem Eindruck nach für einen Kurzaufenthalt konzipiert.||Restaurant:|Wir haben im Innenhof/Gastgarten gespeist und uns das Weinhaus-Tasting-Menü (6 Gänge zu € 127,-- zzgl. Weinbegleitung € 67,-- zzgl. Gedeck € 5,--) p.P. gegönnt. Das Essen war ausgezeichnet, zwei Gänge wurden vom Küchenchef persönlich serviert, der Service konnte zu jedem Gericht was sagen. Die Weinbegleitung war stark Nigl-lastig was aufgrund des Weinhauses zwar verständlich ist, aber bei diesem Küchenniveau auch ein unnötiges festklammern (bei 5/6 Weinen) an die eigenen Weine ist. Die Weine wurden am Tisch ausgeschenkt (als ehrliche 1/8) in ein passendes Riedel Glas (vermutlich Veritas Serie), der Service konnte zu jedem Wein was sagen und mir auch auf Nachfrage Antworten. |Resümee Restaurant: Ausgezeichnete Küche, Ambiente mittelmäßig, Service kompetent aber nicht herzlich, preislich etwas zu hoch (Essen und Weine, hier bewegen wir uns preislich schon in Richtung Michelin Stern). Die Weinkarte (die ich zumindest gesehen habe) Nigl + Lokales + ein Hand von roten Weinen aus Carnuntum u. Bgld, mit schöner Jahrgangstiefe aber dann doch außerhalb der Nigl Welt mit geringer Breite. ||Zum Weingut: |Vom Weingut bekommt man nichts mit. Beim Hotelcheck ist das Weingut kein Thema. Wer Nigl als Weingut nicht kennt, kann es nur durch Zufall erfragen.|Durch einen Zufallsfund haben wir die "Honest Bar gefunden". Die "Honest Bar" ist laut Aushang ein Selbstbedienungskühlschrank mit Nigl-Einstiegs-Weine. Die Preisgestaltung ca. x2 gegenüber Brutto Einkaufspreis. |Einstiegswein überteuert auf dem Zimmer? Wenn ich am Weingut deutlich über den EP eine Flasche trinke, dann mit Bedienung und da mit dem passenden Ambiente auch mehr als EP x2 und entsprechender Weinauswahl. |Auf der Suche nach ein Glas Wein habe wir uns in einen Verkostungsraum in der Nähe der Hotelrezeption gefunden. Hier wird (vermutlich?) Wein verkostet (Zalto Gläser auf den Tischchen) und verkauft. Das es knapp nach 18 Uhr war, hat uns die Mitarbeiterin mitgeteilt, dass sie nur bis 18 Uhr da ist und wenn wir was trinken möchten im Restaurant dazu die Möglichkeit hätten. Dort wurden wir mit einem Wort "Reserviert ?" empfangen. Da im Restaurant jeder Tisch eingedeckt war (wir nicht reserviert hatten, da wir ja nichts essen wollten) und mich die Situation langsam zum ärgern brachte, dass man hier nicht einfach was "gutes" trinken kann hab ich mich kommentarlos umgedreht und bin wieder gegangen. Nach meiner persönlichen Abkühlphase hab ich mich Zähneknirschend für eine überteuerte Flasche Riesling Urgestein entschieden und das "Nigl-Einstiegs-Wein-Erlebnis" im Hotelzimmer genossen.|Resümee Weingut: Ich kenne die meisten Weine von diversen Verkostungen – vor Ort bekommt man nicht viel von einem Weingut mit. Wer Nigl Weine trinken möchte, sollte dies im Restaurant beim Dinner oder zuhause tun. Für eine enge Beziehung zu Nigl-Weine ist ein Hotelaufenthalt nicht förderlich sondern in meinem Fall eher das Gegenteil. ||Gesamtresümee:|Unterm Strich entsteht ein Bild von hoher Qualität, aber zugleich einer kühlen, unpersönlichen Stimmung, die verhindert, dass man sich als Gast wirklich willkommen fühlt. An den paar Tagen hab ich nur zweimal ein Lächeln war genommen (Küchenchef und die Dame vom Verkostungsraum). |Für einen kurzen Aufenthalt mit gutem Essen kann man es empfehlen – als Weinreise-Ziel ist es dagegen nicht lohnend gewesen.|In meinem Fall wird der Nigl-Posten im Weinkeller mal so stehen bleiben und mit etwas Abstand werde ich entscheiden, ob dies beim Kochen oder im Glas...
