Gasthaus Paussbauer — Restaurant in Mühlbach am Hochkönig

Nice restaurant at the top, okay not the very top, but way up in the mountains. The decoration is very rustic but sooooo nice. If you are lucky you can creep into the corner where the tile stove is (very nice if it is cold outside). The food is classic and specific for Austria. They indeed have special "Salzburger" specials, or you stick to Schnitzel, Cordon Bleu or Kaiserschmarn.

The one and only challange is to fin this place. Best description I've heard and read. Turn left (or right, depends from where you are coming) at the traffice island and then just follow the road. If you think "That's not possible I've to be wrong, then you are on the right way, just keep on traveling.

It's not a typical touristic place and the also locals are coming here. It was a recommendation of our host and it was worth coming...

Ca. 200 Höhenmeter über Mühlbach am Hochkönig ist dieses Gasthaus ein beliebter Anlaufpunkt für Mittag- und Abendessen. Reservierung wird empfohlen.

Man sitzt hier mit tollem Blick auf den Hochkönig und in wunderbarer Ruhe; abends ist es länger sonnig als im Ort.

Kostenlose Parkplätze gibt es entlang der Straße und dann geht man ein paar Meter.

Das Lokal ist nicht modern, aber ganz gemütlich eingerichtet. Besonders schön ist natürlich die Terrasse. Für Kinder gibts einen großen Spielplatz.

Wir waren zu fünft zum Essen hier. Die Bärlauchsuppe war versalzen, die Salate in Ordnung und die Kaspressknödel weitgehend geschmacklos (wurden dann auch von der Rechnung genommen). Eine große Enttäuschung war das Zanderfilet: es war nicht gebraten, sondern in einer Hülle frittiert. Und ganz furchtbar fand ich das Tiefkühlgemüse dazu: Bohnen, Erbsen, Karotten wie in den 70er Jahren. Null kreativ, null liebevoll und schon gar nicht frisch gekocht mit Gemüse der Saison. Der Apfelstrudel und die Waffeln waren gut.

Die Speisen wurden sehr schnell serviert, also wird wohl vorwiegend mit Fertigprodukten gearbeitet.

Nur auf Vorbestellung gibt es Schweinebraten, Ripperl oder knusprige Haxen mit Serviettenknödel und Sauerkraut in der großen Pfanne serviert.

Walking up is perfect to build your appetite for the fantastic food. The setting is stunning, the welcome warm, ambience beyond compare and food to die for. We came three times during our holiday. The sledge down the mountain in the snow is mind blowing, scary (in the dark), but the perfect ending to a fantastic experience.
