Where do I begin? We absolutely loved, loved, loved the Angerer Alm. We traveled with our family of four (two boys aged 8 and 6) and were joined by my parents!
We had a room with bunk beds, which was absolutely perfect for the boys! Our balcony was just the perfect place to enjoy a nightcap after the boys fell asleep. Sitting out under the mountain sky, listening to the cow bells below was phenomenal!
Breakfast was incredible. They really laid out an incredible spread for us, and it was the perfect way to start a day of hiking and exploring on the mountain. Everyone was happy and ready to go after those breakfasts!!
The shower was very nice with plenty of hot water and water pressure. We all commented on how much we enjoyed the shower situation at the Angerer Alm!
Getting to and from the Alm was pretty easy! We parked at the Talstation in St. Johann and purchased single up/down tickets. This allowed us to park for free for multiple nights. You can also hike up to the Alm, it’s approximately 7km. From the Alm you can ride the Bergbahn to the top or you can hike! It’s a nice walk but rather steep and I would not recommend for non-Athletic types. It was 2 miles one-way, 4 miles round trip.
The staff at the Alm was incredible! It is clear that Anne Marie truly cares and puts all her love into this slice of heaven! Timor absolutely took care of us from start to finish and we really truly enjoyed talking with him. My boys really loved the ice cream treats they went to pick out. Dinner was fantastic and we are already figured out when we can get back for another escape to the peace, quiet and enjoyment of the Angerer Alm!
Update: Round 2 at Angerer Alm was as equally wonderful as our first perfect experience! We (our family of four) stayed two nights in the middle of May. Hiked nearly 20 miles with the boys (8 & 6 y.o). Back at the Alm, the boys made friends and played a fun fußball match in the hard while we lounged in chairs in the sun!
With breakfast at Angerer, lunch at the Stanglarm happy hour and dinner back at Angerer, it’s just the perfect getaway for us.
We are already planning a third visit. We...
Read moreIn recent years we have enjoyed hiking near several huts (hütte) in the Austrian Alps. In addition to hiking, we also enjoy fine dining and exploring regional wines. To our delight, Angerer Alm, under the direction of proprietor and acclaimed wine expert Annemarie Foidl brings together hiking, fine dining and wine exploration in a beautiful setting. Angerer Alm is located on the Sankt Johann side about one-third of the way up Kitzbuhel Horn (mountain). Hiking on well-maintained trails with superb panoramic alpine views begins just outside the Alm. Both mid-way to the summit at Hirschbichl and at the summit at Gipfelhaus am Kitzbüheler Horn, we enjoyed hearty food and refreshing local brews. If only all of our hiking adventures had such nice rewards!||||Each day after hiking, we relaxed on the deck and enjoyed great views, local beer and refreshing Austrian Wines. We opted for three- and five- course meals in the Alm’s restaurant. Our appetites were rewarded with delicious and fresh pan-European cuisine with each course personally paired to Austrian wine by Annemarie. Before dinner the first night, Annemarie took us on a tour of the wine cellar (where we could have stayed for quite some time!). Have your ever seen a bottle of 1795 Madiera? Yes, her cellar has substantial breadth going well beyond regional selections.||||Rooms are comfortable and have nice views mountain views. Traditional Austrian breakfasts prepared us well for the day’s hiking. Angerer Alm is one of those gems hidden from the view of most international travelers. We enjoyed this fine experience owing to Bavarian friends who share our interests and knew about Angerer Alm. I did not need to use my primitive German language skills as Annemarie is multi-lingual ….and she speaks the language of wine in such a friendly and knowledgeable way.||||Next time we’ll come back in winter to enjoy both skiing in Kitzbuhel ….and the hospitality and dining at...
