Hof van Cleve — Restaurant in Kruisem

I am extremely disappointed and frustrated with the treatment I received from Hof van Cleve. I had made a reservation for a special occasion to celebrate my wife's 30th birthday. Unfortunately, due to a serious medical situation involving my in-laws, I had to cancel the reservation.

Despite notifying the restaurant 7 days in advance, they showed no empathy or understanding of our serious situation. The response I received was cold and unhelpful, insisting on charging me €800 as a cancellation fee. Given that this restaurant is fully booked 6 months in advance, they could have easily found other customers to take our place. To add context, I woke up at 5 AM on May 1st just to secure the reservation, highlighting how challenging it is to get a table there.

Furthermore, the restaurant never offered me anything in exchange for the €800, nor did they inform me upfront that this would be the case. This lack of transparency and refusal to accommodate in any way amounts to nothing less than theft, plain and simple.

To add insult to injury, when I attempted to use the previously paid cancellation fee for a new reservation, I was told that the restaurant had changed ownership and that my previous payment could not be used. This was despite following their instructions to make a future booking.

The entire experience has been deeply disappointing and stressful. This level of customer service and lack of compassion is unacceptable, especially from a high-end establishment. I would advise potential customers to be cautious and consider other options where their situation and loyalty might be treated with more respect and understanding.

Conclusion: Avoid Hof van Cleve if you expect any form of flexibility or empathy from their customer service. There are plenty of other excellent restaurants that value their customers and handle unexpected situations with grace and...

Very warmly received by the host for lunch and had an amazing afternoon with my brother and best friend. Liked the service a lot as very relaxed and super well organized. The dishes were one by one jewels (best oysters ever!), the wines very nice (Tokaj and Priorat very nice), lots of chocolate towards the end, and above all liked the authenticity and down-to-earth mindset of the place, the chef, his wife and his team while being awarded so many times and playing in the top of gastronomy worldwide. Definitely hope to come back one day for the evening service and escape for a few hours from the world outside....
