Brasserie de Kronemolen — Restaurant in Zedelgem

How heartwarming it was to enter this busy little local restaurant in West Flanders and immediately experience its welcoming ambience. (Judging by the full tables, it's a good idea to book ahead, by the way.) We ate from the restaurant's seasonal game menu (I imagine, largely locally sourced); but there's an extensive regular carte too. The pheasant croquettes we shared as a starter were excellent, rich and creamy inside the crisply fried carapace, a witty Dutch variation on a theme. My main course was roasted fillet of hare with rösti and an attractive medley of seasonal vegetables. The port-wine sauce was nuanced rather than the assertively rich confection that often accompanies this dish. I could have done with a bit more of that assertiveness, to be honest, but everything was beautifully cooked and presented (in quantities sufficient to feed an army, too.) I liked my partner's wild boar stew - plenty of gamey oomph there! Finally we shared a Sabayon (zabaglione) flavoured with Belgian cherry beer. Ik was aangenaam verrast. Aan de buitenkant lijkt het niets speciaals, maar binnen is het gezellig zitten. De bediening was goed en heel vriendelijk. Ik koos voor de vegetarische lasagne, die was lekker maar bestond voor 85% uit spinazie. Wat meer verschillende groenten was beter geweest, want nu at ik vooral een bakje spinazie met pasta. Ik zou het niet opnieuw bestellen, ondanks dat het wel goed van smaak was. De enige echte teleurstelling van de avond was de huiswijn. Huiswijnen zijn nooit echte topwijn, maar toch altijd wel lekker. Deze absoluut niet. Het smaakte als een goedkope supermarktwijn, wat erg jammer was gezien de prijs die je betaalt op restaurant voor een fles wijn. We komen zeker nog terug, maar bestellen dan wel een...

Gisteren 3 x 2 voorgerechten en 3 x 2 hoofdgerechten afgehaald. Gevarieerd koud, warm, vis & vlees. Wat een voltreffer! Proficiat. Ik stond een beetje weigerachtig tegen het afhaalprincipe omdat dat snel een uitgedroogde boel wordt. Niet zo hier. Genoten van de kwaliteit van alle gerechten. Bovendien heldere beschrijving over hoe je best alles afwerkt (15 min) en vriendelijk antwoord op mijn telefonische vragen. Volgende keer hopelijk live, maar zeker...
