My family and I visited Costela Grill on a quiet Wednesday evening around 9:30 p.m., and let me tell you, we were treated like VIPs. We were the only ones in the restaurant, which at first I took as a bad sign. "Maybe it's not going to be good and over priced", I had thought. You see, a few days earlier, my wife had spotted an Instagram post announcing they’d be serving Mexican food on Wednesdays, piquing her curiosity—especially about their flour tortillas for the tacos. She convinced us to give it a try, and off we went. A little background: my parents are Mexican-born and raised, and though I was born in the U.S., I grew up immersed in Mexican culture and cuisine. I know authentic Mexican food intimately. Since moving to Brazil, satisfying a craving for it has meant cooking it myself, so I approached this experience with modest expectations. I’d set the bar low, having walked out of so-called “Mexican” restaurants here that left me offended by their inauthentic attempts at “authenticity.” Costela Grill, however, didn’t strike me as pretending to be a Mexican restaurant. Its name fits perfectly—grilled ribs and a broad menu suggest a different focus—and I wasn’t expecting to be disappointed in the same way. Being the only customers could’ve been a red flag for some, but I’m glad we didn’t judge the place by its emptiness. The service was phenomenal. You might think, “Well, of course, you were the only ones there!” But I’ve been to empty restaurants with terrible service—this was different. The staff was all hands on deck, attentive, and eager to cater to our every request. We ordered a mix of dishes from their extensive regular menu and two from the Mexican specials: BBQ pork tacos and BBQ pork nachos. As the food arrived, each dish outdid the last. Let’s start with the Mexican offerings. Were they authentic? No, not in the traditional sense—but I didn’t mind one bit once I took a bite. The tacos weren’t made with corn tortillas, so they weren’t “tacos” in the classic Mexican style. Instead, they were a fantastic take on a flour gordita, a soft, pillowy creation popularized by Mexican immigrants in the U.S. Stuffed with smoky BBQ pork and topped with tangy pickled onions, they were an absolute delight—delicious enough that I’d order them again and again without hesitation. Then came the nachos. Traditionally, “nachos” refers to corn tortilla chips drenched in a signature cheese sauce, often piled with toppings. What we got wasn’t that—but again, I wasn’t complaining. These were a revelation: an inventive, flavor-packed dish that transcended the name. I’d argue they were better than any nachos I’ve had. Both the “tacos” and “nachos” could use a rebrand—perhaps as Mexican-inspired cousins—because the chef clearly knows how to wield flavor. These culturally inspired creations were so good I’d return just for them. The rest of the menu impressed too, though not flawlessly. We tried the fried chicken from the regular offerings, and while the texture was spot-on, the batter needed more salt to deliver that satisfying salty crunch I crave. Another small nitpick: I love spice, and even the homemade hot sauce, while tasty with great acidity to complement the smoky BBQ, lacked the heat I’d hoped for. These minor gripes are why I’d rate the food four stars instead of five—it’s excellent, but not perfect. The empty dining room made our experience feel special and unique, though I’m not eager to test this place with a crowd. Your mileage may vary if it’s busy, but if you catch Costela Grill on a quiet night, you’re in for a treat. The service, the creativity, and those standout dishes left us amazed—and I’ll definitely be back.
