As someone living in Germany and familiar with Kaufland’s usual product standards, I was extremely disappointed during my recent experience at the Kaufland store in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. Many products in the Bulgarian store are more expensive than in Germany, which is shocking considering the much lower average income in Bulgaria. For example, grapes cost 3 EUR in Plovdiv compared to 1.79–2 EUR in Germany, grapefruit is 2.04 EUR in Plovdiv versus 0.99 EUR in Germany, and Segafredo coffee is 46 BGN (around 23.50 EUR) in Plovdiv while it’s only 16.99 EUR or less in Germany. What’s even worse is the quality of the products. The packaging is identical to what we see in Germany, but the contents are clearly inferior. They look German on the outside, but inside they feel like cheaper, lower-quality versions, yet sold at German-level prices or even higher. This feels misleading and unfair to Bulgarian customers, who are paying a premium for what they believe are high-quality European goods. Kaufland should be more transparent and align prices with local purchasing power—or at least offer the true German quality that customers expect when they see familiar brands and packaging. Most of what you need in one place. Some individual articles are quite overpriced for a supermarket, but that's a general issue...
