Feedback is based on multiple trips over the course of four years.

Have been there multiple times as it is unfortunately the closest to my house.

  1. Service/cleanliness.

I have had waitresses serving my food while eating nachos themselves x 1.

Same waitress ringing me in at the bar while eating pie x 1.

Another waitress cleaned off my table by brushing the crumbs on the floor with her bare hand.

If cleanliness is important to you, probably not the place to go.

Waitresses also tend to have an attitude or “quirk” which I’m sure some old guys enjoy, but really it’s just unprofessional and they aren’t charming enough to get away with it and really it just comes off rude.

  1. Food.

Food is decent now. They have made major upgrades in this category, but it still can’t compete with any other bar in town.

  1. Venue.

Nice patio. Usually ruined by smokers.

No kids allowed. Although probably a blessing in disguise for the kids.

  1. Take home.

In summary, skip this place unless you have no other options.

I really would love if this place was at least clean as it’s so close to my house. When I used to live near Roy’s (excellent pub in Royston), I was there all the time.

Try Timber Room (relatively close with professional servers and good food) or Land and Sea...

As a local resident who has frequented the Griffin on numerous occasions, I was embarrassed and upset by an incident that happened today at the pub. I had 7 international visitors with me and it was a spontaneous decision to drop in for drinks and appies after a visit to the beach.

Despite the fact that all my guests were of legal age, one did not have I.D.

Instead of politely explaining the licence laws, empathizing with a smile and suggesting we return another day, the waitress immediately gathered up the menus and told us we must leave because she could be fined. Her attitude was so rude that several of my guests said that they had never experienced anything like it during their time in Canada.

Had we argued or been difficult, I would understand her unpleasantness towards us. Besides asking if we could order our friend a soft drink instead of alcohol, we did not give her any possible reason for the treatment we received.

Griffin Management, please educate your staff on how to pleasantly and diplomatically handle this type of situation. These people bring a lot of money to our province and deserve respect - not humiliation. As a Canadian, I was...

Vegan options are not as advertised- I ordered vegan bangers and mash. What I recieved was two sausages in casings with about 2tbsp of gravy and French fries. The waitress said. “Well it’s supposed to say vegan bangers and fries”. I pointed out she’d informed me of that then I would have made a different choice. I sent it back and ordered vegan tostadas which were advertised with squash and beans on them. I received 2 small tostadas with less than a teaspoon of refritos on each and piled high with boxed salad. There was nothing else on them! Seriously-how hard would it have been to microwave a potato for a 25.00 bangers and mash plate? And the tostadas weren’t even close to something a chef should have let out of the kitchen. The waitress dropped off cream for my after dinner coffee, after I politely explained I didn’t eat meat, dairy or eggs. She never offered a non-dairy option and I couldn’t flag her down to ask. If you’re plant based, vegan, or lactose intolerant don’t be fooled by the online and in house menu. The only thing the Griffin offers for us is...

Our first visit. It was busy when we arrived for dinner, but we found a seat and we were given a friendly greeting. I had the schnitzel with veg and mashed potatoes. Delicious. SL had a burger which she said had a lovely char and flavour and the onion rings wete perfect. Although we were full we had to try the peanut butter pie It was good, but a bit dense. We look forward to many more visits.

We went for lunch after a military event. Staff were wonderful, patio was lovely and the food was delicious. I had the Brie which was amazing. Close to the base (CFB Comox) so very convenient for us. Have been before and will go back again. Good portion sizes and decently priced. We all felt very welcomed to be there, even though we showed up a little before they even opened.

We immediately described the vibe as "the pubbiest pub," and the menu has all the pub classics, but done SO well. The deep fried pickles were top notch, my salad was great, and the prime rib special was so big that we took half home and turned it into breakfast for two. Great selection of Vancouver Island beer on tap.
