This is another local specialty fast food restaurant that when visiting the Newfoundland East Coast you literally "need" to visit, burgers and sandwiches Newfoundland style, nothing compared to them, and I've been around.
Due to my lifestyle I'm perpetually hungry, normally go for the super healthy but... From time to time I'll indulge and I'm rather picky on what I indulge in.
A couple of days ago, on recommendations of a business friends from Newfoundland, we dropped by the Jigger, we pre-ordered two double all beef burgers with fries and coleslaw salad.
When we picked them up, the first thing that we received was the traditional Newfoundland super friendly welcome, an unassuming conversation with a very warm welcome and glad you're here feeling to it. The second item was the smell, there was something about it that arose our appetite, third, when we got home and layed the food on our plates we remarked the fresh appearance of the burgers, fries and salads, the beef patties were evidently hand made and the irregularity of the buns made it clear that they were locally baked! OMG, the generous size of the servings, I swore that would not be able to finish it, boy was I wrong.
The juiciness and rich umami of the beef, the non crumble nature of the buns, the Canadian bacon slices, fresh fries and crispiness of the coleslaw was too much of a feast, I just concentrated on the flavorful nature of the burger and next thing you know... It was gone, yes finished the whole thing, without regrets since the following day went for my daily trail jog.
The Jigger is a must! I haven't tried the turkey sandwich with a side of fries and stuffing all swimming in gravy, that I've been promised will rock my culinary world, will have to wait a bit since I suspect it's a caloric bomb lol and still have too workout those hamburger calories further.
Anyhow make sure to pay the Jigger a visit, the owners and meals are one of the many Newfoundland flavors that'll sear...
Read moreI was there with s party of 6 today. I ordered a hot turkey sandwich with white meat. My sandwich was filled with stringy fat and brown hard bites that you couldnât even chew through. I picked it off and ate what i could. The waitress came back and i showed her. She offered me another sandwich which i declined as my party was almost finished their meal. I asked that the sandwich be taken off the bill. The waitress (who was lovely) took the plate with the gross bits on it. She came back and said they would not take the amount off my bill because they offered me a different sandwich. I said ok. We went to pay and the cook came out to the counter and asked my sister why was she causing problems there. My sister said it was me. The cook happened to be my âcousinâ. I said I couldnât eat half the turkey it was disguising. She was like a rabid dog. Yelling at us saying im everybodyâs cousin when they want something and named another cousin, Roxanne, who was there last week. Then she was saying she didnât even know me. I have know her since i was born. Shes my first cousin. Mine you the porch was packed with people. Then she was telling me that the pieces were off the bone. I never once argued about it coming off the bill. I just explained to the waitress I wonât be leaving a tip because i will get my money back that way. I eat there often. I drive up to have a meal. Never again. Not while sheâs cooking my food. At least it was entertaining for those in the porch waiting for their food. I have never been treated so bad at a restaurant. Horrible service by the cook. Like i said. The waitress was lovely. Too bad she missed out on a tip because of the cook. My bill was almost $65.00. Not to mention the others...
Read moreBeautiful little restaurant, I was just passing by and was told they made a great fish and chips. I ordered a 2 piece with fries, fried onions and gravy. I asked for the fish on a separate plate and extra tartar sauce.
The fish was layed directly on top of the gravy which made the bottom soggy. This is why I asked for a separate plate, I do it every time I get fish and chips. Now despite that, the fish was fantastic, fresh and flaky and the batter was crispy and not too heavy. I also asked for tartar sauce but there was none in the bag and i had to go back in to get some.
Home fries are always deadly! These were pretty good. The onions were a little bland and the gravy was ok but also lacked seasoning. I ended up not finishing the fries, not due to the portion but because the gravy and onions.
Overall, I would still recommend especially the fish. I would perhaps try the onion rings next time over the fries. The also have a lot of great options and even do platters for parties and events. Although I wasn't a huge fan of the fries, it was still a decent visit and I still enjoyed it, just because I didn't enjoy it, doesn't mean you would have the same experience and it could have been just an off day or even the time of the day...
