I rarely write negative reviews, but I'm afraid our 2 reserved stays at Kows had major problems. We had booked a stay the night before our ferry to Newfoundland, largely because it looked pretty nice and had it's own restaurant, which is always appreciated after a long day of driving. When we arrived, the woman at the desk did not have a reservation for us. I will admit to being partly to blame for this as I booked it on the phone (rather than online) with a young man who worked in the restaurant and who took all relevant information, including credit card info and assured me I would receive an email confirmation. When I had not received nothing a week later, I called again and this time the woman who runs the inn informed me that she was very, very busy so had not sent it yet, but she gave me a confirmation number. I never did get a follow-up email, but assumed that the number was confirmation enough. At any rate, she did not have our reservation and the inn was full. Now feeling somewhat panicked as there are not an abundance of choices in that area, she called another motel 10 or 15 minutes further up the road. Thankfully they had just had a cancellation and held the room for us until we got there. And to the owner of Kows credit, she gave us a $20 voucher for breakfast the next day. We had a very good breakfast en route to the ferry, although her voucher covered only half the cost of 2 basic bacon and egg meals. ||Now flash forward to our return from Newfoundland. I had also booked that night with Kows (this time online) and she assured us that she did have us in for the return trip, and that the restaurant would still be open for dinner when we arrived. We arrived about 7:30 p.m., and found the door locked and no one in the restaurant. As I was starting to call the number on the door, the owner arrived and let us in to check us in. She had had some kind of fall and badly hurt her arm and face and couldn't open the restaurant as a result. I believe she is the chief cook and bottle washer at this inn. So, now we had a room, but nowhere to get dinner. The restaurant we had eaten in 11 nights earlier closes at 7:00 p.m. Our owner was very apologetic and in fairness, not her fault that she had hurt herself. However, it highlighted to us that she must be operating on a shoestring and has no other staff to fill in and help out when needed. She told us she would not be open for breakfast the next day either as she couldn't fully lift her arm. Thankfully, when we got to our room we immediately looked for somewhere that would deliver and found a very good pizza place not too far away that was able to deliver dinner for us. The next morning, we went to a local fast food coffee place and brought a basic breakfast back to our room for breakfast.||At any rate, the room itself was lovely - very modern, freshly painted and super clean, with a very comfortable bed. Although there was a small fridge and microwave, a coffee maker would have been a nice addition. I wish I could recommend this inn, but based on our experience, unless more staff are on hand to keep the place open when circumstances dictate, I would not...
Read moreThe staff at the inn were nice, the room however, was incredibly disappointing. It’s very clear the staff does not properly clean their rooms.
In the bathroom, the shower had caused water to pool everywhere on the floor—after drying it with a towel it had stained it completely brown, as the floor was that dirty—on top of that, the towel rack kept falling off the wall. The sink was rickety, and the water pressure was so weak it came out of the faucets like it was sourced from a dried up well.
As for the main room, the floors were very sticky, and had visible markings of dirt and other substances on the ground. Bugs filled every corner and the baseboards were black on top from dust build up. I inspected the bed before going to sleep, and I found a used, crumpled, “solid” mass of tissues in the sheets. Absolutely unacceptable. The sheets on both beds hadn’t been changed. Handprints were visible on the headboard of one of the beds, and various types of hair were all over the pillows, sheets, lamps, etc.
As for the restaurant, our server was lovely, however the food was sub-par for the price. Soggy onion rings, over-sauced chinese food, and floppy burgers.
All in all, I would not recommend this inn to anyone who struggles to get comfortable in a pretty dirty space. It’s a shame it’s not maintained very well considering it’s in a...
Read moreThis was our second visit as the first was awesome so we wanted to come back.... Won't be back a third time! We ordered 2 of the specials. One was great the other tasted off and there was a piece of a stick in the food and waitress was notified right away. The Waitress was lovely and as helpful as she was allowed to be. Asked to return it and order something else. The new dish was excellent. We got the bill and were charged for the un satisfactory plate as well (that had a stick in it). Asked to speak to the owner to discuss and when she came out immediately started actually yelling at me about no discounts and implied I put the stick there before I could even speak. Very poor management/owner, she is very unprofessional, rude and I wasn't allowed to speak before she stormed back into the kitchen and slammed the door yelling in a different language. The Waitress got a great tip though as...
