Nestled in a quiet spot just off the main line, the Brighton Gate is a hidden gem I stumbled on travelling between Ottawa and Burlington. The staff were gracious and friendly, the restaurant clean and well presented. Notably, the washrooms were very clean, with a solid nod to accessibility. The menu was simple yet had variety, speaking to me of a kitchen that cooked from the heart with fresh ingredients rather than frozen staples. I kept it simple with a burger and salad, and was stunned when I asked my usual question: “Coke or Pepsi please” and was greeted with ,”We have both. Which would you prefer?” The first of a series of small but pleasant surprises that set the tone. It is hard to ruin a salad and it takes such a small effort to take it up a notch. Halved cherry tomatoes rather than diced and flavourless hothouse kind, and the addition of sliced almonds sprinkled on top made the salad both visually appealing and tastier than the usual fare. The burger, served on a soft and fresh brioche bun and topped with crispy onion rings was delicious. I prefer my ground meats to be a bit well done, which this was without burning or drying it out, and the unfinished edges told me I was right about not relying on flash-frozen patties plucked from a cardboard box. This was hand-crafted with care. The rings were fabulous; not tasting of old oil but rather the fresh, almost buttery flavour of clean oil and crisp batter. All told, it set the stage for a smooth drive home (or a nap to lick my lips revel in the memory). All told, the Brighton Gate was exactly what I expect from the County…kindness, cleanliness and...
Read moreVery welcoming and friendly staff and nice atmosphere. The staff were very attentive. The food was ok, me and my wife both had the gate set breakfast, the bacon was decent and the eggs were cooked well my pancakes were barely cooked through the middle, the sausages were a bit bland, half my potatoes were not cooked through due to them being quite large compared to other chunks, the seasonal fruit was warm as if it had been cut and left sitting out not in the fridge, the hollandaise sauce however was delicious! A tiny bit thinner than I usually prefer but the flavour was perfect! I had a chocolate milk which was approximately 300ml considered and large and was $6.50 which is outrageous, if the menu would’ve had drink prices I definitely wouldn’t have bothered with that!
Overall I wouldn’t go back for the price of the breakfast versus the quality as our breakfast came to $55 before tip. They were offering some great sounding food for their lunch specials so may return to try lunch. As it’s a nice little spot with great friendly...
Read moreFood definetly does not match the prices. Service is generally good, but feels like not many there really care about food. Been there on several occasions, breakfast is definetly best, although sausages aren't great and home fries need some flavour. Egg cooking is hit and miss (poached medium-hard at best for a benny when asked for soft) Had chicken parm that was terribly burnt and small. Was charged $12 for a handful of Caesar salad that was made with ice burg? Had the salmon once, flavours were good but salmon was cooked to oblivion. Place definetly has good potential and good people just very low standards for who's watching the kitchen. I love when a kitchen takes on people to teach them but someone needs to control what goes out and whats coming in, in terms of ingredient quality. Go for breakfast and check it out, I'll keep trying it here and there to support a local place but food is definetly not worth the price so far. I get the kitchen can only do so much with their given budget so maybe it goes back...
