I don’t know why Newfoundlanders give this place a high ranking, if you’re one that enjoys food being crispy, fresh and not full of grease, I would avoid. A good place nearby with similar food choices "The Quay" which is located in the town of Brigus.
What was wrong
Ordered a 1 price Fish & Chips
Chips, although plentiful… Came out to be soggy, overly greasy and not crispy at all. Fish was cooked fully, but the batter used had a strange taste. Beer battered, but tasted off, perhaps it’s the seasoning used or the batter was left out for too long.
Experience
I’m not one to write bad reviews, but this has been my 3rd time visiting in the past two years. I, friends and family, all had the same experience with the food. I was really hoping that this time would be different as why would people write great reviews otherwise?
I went inside fore a refund, I explained to the cook what was my disliking as well as my friends. Was told that the batter was done that way for the last 15 years and the fries are the way the locals enjoy it.
If that’s the case, understandable… it’s a business and they have to cater to who they serve most, however, be aware that for those who expect to receive food they orders to be made in a traditional style, to garner complaints.
After understanding that this is just how the joint runs, others should be...
Read moreA homey restaurant on the island that serves unique items and flavors such as orange creamsicle milkshakes and oversized, thickly battered and seasoned onion rings. The menu goes on and on and is written all over the walls, from various meals to snacks to desserts. I usually have onion rings which are consistently good. I've tried more on their menu and always found the food delicious. Servers are often helpful and ready to serve; though friendly they also present themselves as unprofessional and show a bit of attitude. Service is usually timely and precise except in summer when it is extremely busy but that's understandable. Building is usually kept clean, especially the food and beverage areas are often seen being cleaned but the serving counter, particularly the debit machine could use some attention especially considering there is no tap. The attatched bathroom is usually clean and stocked when it's not peak season but could use some upgrading. Love stopping in during road trips with friends and family and reccomend it to anyone who will be...
Read moreYou park in the lot order and they will tell you how long and then you go get the food. The gravy seems like that powdered stuff you mix with water. Its just ok at best. The fries were skinny shoe string homemade fries. Thet were soggy and the outside was singed slightly black. I can understand the gravy sogging them up a bit but they were not good. The wings were the real non processed type. The batter was that wet plain flour batter which was soggy and greasy. No flavor or seasoning. The wings were like white. As if they were boiled and not fried. For $20 its was the biggest waste of a 20 i ever spent. I really don't know how or why they had a good name for fish n chips/ chicken etc. I hear people raving about it over the years. No offense I know this might come off rude but everyone who thinks that is what good is doesn't have a clue in the world what good is and they must of never had a good feed in their life. It was one of the worst I had. I mean it's edible but its nothing...
