Excited for my first time at Umi Yama, we arrived just before opening, with the doors open already to customers. Though informed they weren't officially open, we decided to wait and grabbed a table for all three of us. However, after sitting for about 30 minutes and being served our water, the waitress insisted we move to another set of tables.
Two people at our table waited over 40 minutes for their food. Despite this, she was tipped generously. She made 35$ in tips at our table. Yet, the waitress singled me out, questioning if everything was okay with the service, to which I politely responded "Yes" However, she persisted and asked again. I responded with "yes". It seemed to be becoming personal now with the way she asked the next question "Did I do something wrong??" and then continued to complain about the tip percentage she received and continue to lecture me about her tax burdens. "I'm just letting you know" and repeated this same sentence a few times expressing dissatisfaction with the tip, insisting it should meet a certain percentage because she pays taxes.
It felt racially motivated as she had asked us where we were from before we paid. And after being unhappy with the tips she received she told me that she pays taxes to the government to serve us. WOW
Assuming we dont pay taxes? To add to that it's like she was implying that it was our duty to tip more because she pays taxes...... and we dont? Why even mention this? The entitlement was real. And FYI first nations pay taxes too!
I told her that I tipped her and like her I also "paid taxes" on my meal.
If I have to tip you because you pay taxes then tax exempt should be honored because I'm first nation? Is that how this works? (I never said this btw but I was thinking it) Does this place honor tax exempt for first nations? No. You don't see me making a big deal and harassing the staff about it. Based on what she said she is basically forcing customers to contribute more to her income to help her offset her tax burden. After telling her that we pay taxes too she back tracked and said that the government taxes her based on the presumption that customers will tip the standard 15%
Because she kept repeating "I'm just telling you" and "im just telling you for next time" I also repeated the same and made it clear that I tipped her and that I pay taxes too. Her insistence made me defensive and I felt uncomfortable and quite humiliated especially as she used me as an example for other paying customers and openly engaged in this conversation around a room full of customers clearly wanting everyone to hear.
This back and forth continued until she finally relented. It was clear she wanted to publicly shame me. Her behavior soured the entire experience, making it unlikely for me to return. She's losing customers at someone elses business. Its too bad because whoever was cooking was a great cook. Good food bad service.
Also the amount I decide to tip or not is up to me. No one's gonna force me to tip more just because they feel entitled to more. We all pay taxes it's not my job to ensure that her taxes are offset and that she's...

If you know what the real sushi is in Japan and if you are expecting something similar, this place won’t please you. But if you would like to experience something different or you are craving for Asian food in this region it worths at least a try. Of course I knew that I could not expect a real sushi in this part of Quebec but my expectation was a bit higher hence the 3 star. If I could, I would give 2.5.
When you make a reservation over the phone, make sure to get the person’s name on the other end of the line - we reserved a table over the phone the night before but the restaurent couldn’t find the record when we arrived and it took sometime to find a table for us (and perhaps that was the reason for the rushed service). It sounded if we knew who took our reservation, it would have expedited the process. We were standing in the middle of the restaurant for good 10min.
Overall it was okay. I would order other Asian dishes but not sushi if I ever go back...
Read moreI don’t generally share my views of restaurants but felt I had to this time around. The atmosphere is fun, cool and hip. The sushi that I had was fine but nothing extraordinary . The service for me was the weak point. I found it to be transactional and impersonal. The waitress didn’t appear to care at all about making this a positive dining experience for me. Also the waitress asked if I wanted extra condiments without mentioning that there would be an extra fee. I left the restaurant feeling dispirited and disappointed. Perhaps others will hopefully have a better dynamic...
