My friend and I, both seniors, were looking forward to a nice quiet meal at the Dornoch Grill last Saturday about 4:00. My friend has had some mobility issues recently and it was hard for her to get from the car into the pub. After being seated at a booth, the waitress came up to us and I said hello. She proceeded to tell us the specials of the day. When she mentioned the beef and barley soup was $10.00, I was quite surprised and exclaimed "$10 for a bowl of soup." She very snarkily said, "Well don't order it then." We couldn't believe her attitude, but proceeded to look at the menu. When she came back to the table, I said that her comment upset me and was not very polite. She told us to go to Swiss Chalet, if we wanted a cheap bowl of soup. Then she got all huffy and told us that she would not wait on us at all and that we could leave. My friend asked if another waitress could wait on us and were told that she was the only person there. I later found out that she was the owner, not just a waitress. I went over to her and apologized and said that we were really looking forward to a meal at the Dornoch as we know how good their food is. I apologized three times, but she would not even consider accepting my apologies. I even asked if we could please stay because of my friend's mobility issues and she absolutely declined to serve us. She told me that she is sick and tired of people coming in and complaining about the price. We had no other option but to leave and went to the Georgian Bay Family Restaurant, where we had a wonderful meal served by a friendly waitress.
After asking around and talking to other people about this situation, I found out that this owner has mistreated customers and staff on a regular basis. I have never been spoken to by anyone like that. Her behaviour was quite ABUSIVE especially to two seniors with mobility issues. Why would she be so adamant, after I apologized three times, for my startled comment about the soup? I can only put it down to the fact that she had no staff and had to wait tables on Saturday nearing dinner time. Anyone I have talked to can't believe how we were treated. Upon reading the reviews, I found that many are very positive and comment on the friendly service . I guess we were just not lucky that day. My daughter and granddaughter are arriving in late July and we had planned to go to the Dornoch for abirthday dinner, as they had enjoyed the food there so much two years ago. Needless to say, we will not be going back to the Dornoch to be abused by this new owner's irrational behaviour. Nor will I be recommending this establishment as a great place to eat, as I often have when people on Facebook ask for...
Read moreWe had a $50 gift certificate for this place. When we presented it to pay a portion of our bill they said that they couldnât accept that because they have changed ownership. We ended up being in such a horrible and embarrassing situation. I would never put customers in such a bad situation as an owner or a manager of a restaurant. Very poor customer service! Fact: we had the gift certificate and if the ownership changed, itâs not our fault!
Reply to clarify: it was not 50% off our bill, you gave $25 off, thatâs 50% of the certificate. It means that we still had to pay $25 that was already paid by the person who gave us the certificate. There was not much to explain when you said that you wouldnât accept the certificate but could give a discount. We would never leave any place without paying our bill, so you were in the control. The food was really good, and we really had a good experience at your place. Our kids loved the food and we were talking about returning. But by having that situation by the end of our experience, the feeling is that there is not much consideration to people. I understand that the ownership has changed and so on, but the fact is that we had a genuine gift certificate and we were placed in that bad situation as if it was our fault or we were...
Read moreFirst time trying Dornoch tonight at 8:30pm on December 30th and I must say, I was rather disappointed with the takeout order my girlfriend and I brought back home to our Airbnb. We are currently visiting from Toronto and were extremely excited to try this spot out as we saw it on our way in to town, but now I wish we hadnât bothered.
Most often, when you think of a small family owned restaurant, the expectation is that the food is made with more love and care than your typical Kelseyâs, Montanaâs, or East Side Marioâs. However, this was not the case.
While the staff was quite friendly and welcoming, this did not make up for the quality of food they allowed to leave their kitchen.
I ordered chicken tenders with a side of poutine and my girlfriend ordered chicken quesadillas with a salad and we both had our gripes with our meals. My fries were rock solid, so I take it they were old or sadly overcooked. My girlfriendâs quesadillas lacked heavily on the filling.
We wonât be back but hopefully the management team will take the constructive criticism positively and make the necessary changes so any new potential customers and existing ones can be left with a...
