We loved our lighthouse picnic experience. I booked online 2 weeks before our trip. In the day of, you drive up the gravel road to the parking lot, and then hike (uphill on the way there) 1.0 km to the lighthouse. We reserved our picnic for the 12:00 pick up, and arrived early so we could explore the area around the lighthouse before the picnic pick up time. The area is beautiful.
At noon we went in the room at the bottom of the lighthouse to pick up our food. Everything was ready and in a bag for us to take with us. They have baskets and blankets for you to borrow and bring your stuff out to the area around the light house. There is also a single washroom for use inside, that is only accessible from 12-3 when picnics are being served. There are benches and picnic tables, as well as lots of green space to picnic on the ground with your blanket.
I really enjoyed the cookies and orzo salad. By husband loves his curried chicken sandwich, though for me, I don’t love the jam and Brie as much. The sandwiches are huge with very thick slices of bread. Enjoying the picnic with the view of the tuna jumping in the ocean was special. We are so glad we arranged for this picnic and would definitely...

I was finally able to secure a reservation. I had emailed in early July and was told ALL the reservations for the summer were fully booked. I tried for early September on a Wednesday and was successful. The weather was cloudy driving out to Ferryland, but we were hoping for some sun.
If you have a rental car you must park at the Colony of the Avalon because you will void your rental agreement if you drive closer to the lighthouse as it's a typical Newfoundland gravel road with a pothole or two or three...
If you walk from the Colony of the Avalon it's approx. a 20 minutes (depending on how fit you are) If you're local you can drive all the way on the gravel road to the orange sign that says no driving beyond this point. Just park with the other cars on the grass. From this point it's only a 10 min walk to the lighthouse. The picnic consisted of a sandwich, pasta salad, honey lemonade and dessert. The food was meh. Next time I will bring my own picnic. The terrain at the lighthouse is definitely not meant if you have mobility issues. We did see whales spouting off in the distance. And the sun finally did make an appearance. We all got a...
Read moreThis trip to the lighthouse was our first outing upon our arrival in Newfoundland and it was certainly a great way to start a 7 day stay on the island. The location was lovely, the sunshine plentiful, the food delicious, and the providers of all this joy were helpful in all tthings as well as informative about the history of the lighthouse. Loved just sitting at the picnic tables and feeling the breeze and taking in the wildflowers and the views from the cliffs. The only cautionary thing I would say is the walk from the parking to the top of the cliff was a bit strenuous and rough. There was a jeep that went up and down to assist people who found the journey daunting--my group decided to take advantage of it ourselves for the journey back to the car. If I am ever blessed enough to see beautiful Newfoundland again, I would most certainly do this again! ...
