Manitoulin isn't exactly known for its sophisticated culinary scene so upon arriving here, I had to temper my expectations. I had read many reviews praising New Grain prior to coming here but I had my reservation. But upon meeting Jenevieve and having her walk us through the menu and seeing her culinary vision, any doubt I had went out the window. What I appreciated the most was how much care was put into giving us the best culinary experience. Jenevieve was honest and earnest in her recommendations. The food brought our taste buds to life! It was colourful, imaginative and totally unexpected. It was my girlfriend's birthday and we were surprised with a bonus dessert which we appreciated so much. Jenevieve's partner from Manchester who's name escapes me, is an absolute a wizard in the kitchen and made our amazing dessert. Like many reviewers before me, I see a bright future for Jenevieve and her partner! I'm excited to have a go to spot now on Manitoulin!

On a recent day trip from Sudbury to Manitoulin Island, the true destination (aka culinary-gold-at-the-end-of-the-rainbow) was the newly re-opened and soft-launching New Grain Bakery and Kitchen. The menu is equal parts innovation, care, farm-to-table goodness and comfort. Genevieve and Will source darn near every single thing on Manitoulin and it shows up in the bright flavours, varied textures and technicolor palette of every dish. The table became a canvas and they used every colour on the island for their inventive, of-the-moment menu. And for those who have been following Genevieve’s journey, it was an arduous trek full of resilience, courage, faith, community, and preservance to finally and more fully arrive in Gore Bay. It shows up in thoughtful, gullet-delighting, hard-won fare. For us, few things have been more worth the trip than the meal we so thoroughly enjoyed at New Grain. We are both grateful and well fed, and we will return!

By far the best sour dough loaves I have had. Please do yourself a favor and get your bread from here if you are in the island. I tried their classic, cheese and garlic sour dough loaves and was left with a watery mouth so much so that I had to stock up before returning back to Toronto so I could keep having this bread for a few more days :) I even brought some as gifts for my siblings. I also tried their pistachio and cardimom buns and the pecan buns. Both absolutely delicious. Can't recommend them enough. Easily the highlight of my visit to the island when it comes to food. As if that wasn't enough, Andrew and his partner are amazing people. They were very pleasant to talk to and very accommodating given they had stock.
