Another trip to the Bruce Hotel, this time with Dalton and Breanne, for steak and shrimp night. The drive up on a +17 evening was beautiful, 80s–90s country playing, both of us singing along. The leaves were glowing with fall colors, fields dotted with round bales, the odd tractor finishing up harvest, and cows grazing on freshly cut fields. It was sad to see how dry the dugouts were. At one point, we saw cows belly-deep in mud just trying to reach water in the middle of a pond. As we drove, I mentioned wanting to snap a picture of a random playground I always notice along the highway, sitting in the middle of nowhere. At the same time, Deryk brought up a school he used to landscape 30 years ago. Would you believe we both spotted our landmarks at the exact same moment? “There it is!” we said together, Ministik Memorial Park, where Ministik School once stood before it closed in June 2017. We arrived in Bruce a bit early, so we drove around and realized the town is bigger than we thought. I love how the ATB, post office, and community center all sit together in one spot. Right next to them? A playground full of classic pieces. Deryk and I couldn’t resist stopping. Those old-school metal slides instantly brought back memories of burnt legs and butts, and the tetherball pole was too tempting. Of course, he challenged me to a game. My wrist immediately reminded me of why I was terrible at it as a kid, but we laughed our way through a few swings anyway. When Bre and Dalton arrived, we headed in. Bre had been there before, but this was Dalton’s first time. The building was buzzing with life, laughter, conversation, the smell of incredible food drifting everywhere. True to form, the hosts welcomed everyone like family, explaining the evening with humor, tossing in a curse word or two, and somehow remembering each of our names all night. We started with fall-themed drinks: a Toasted Marshmallow Old Fashioned, a Fall Margarita with apple cider, a Sour Sunset Harvest, and (classic Deryk) a Bud and Clam. Dinner did not disappoint. The salad bar was divine, steaks cooked to absolute perfection, sides that paired beautifully, and shrimp that kept coming. We wrapped it all up with dessert, of course. Between bites, I kept glancing around the room, noticing signs I’d missed before. And yes, I had to sneak off for a bathroom selfie. Thank you, Bruce Hotel, for another fabulous night of delicious food, belly laughs (some louder than others in the room), the kind of hospitality that makes you feel like an old friend, and another adventure that makes us want to keep coming back. 🥩🍤🥗 @bruce.hotel

I brought my family here while they were in Alberta visiting! It was recommended to me by a friend who had been there a few weeks before! As soon as you walk in, you’re in a room with something to look at, anywhere you look. Going inside the actual restaurant, the charm continues. This place doesn’t pretend to be something it’s not. It’s casual dining with some of the best, locally sourced, home made food you’re going to have. The service was top notch. Our server learned our names and has a great personality for this industry! We got to sit next to regulars who were a riot! All four of our steaks were cooked to perfection. The salad bar buffet they provided was outstanding. Tried a little bit of each one and each was home made and great! The hot sides were good but when you have those salads on the other side, it’s going to look a bit more lackluster. The potatoes with creamy dill sauce were great and really enjoyed the mushroom and garlic bread as well! The desserts were home made. You can just taste it. My family loved that the owner came out and talked to us. Everyone was very personable. All in all, I can’t say enough about this place. If I could rate higher than 5/5 I would. The food was fantastic, the service was great, even the drive out was lovely. We have plans to go back and are really looking forward to it! Thanks for a great evening!

We went for husband’s birthday dinner. It was a spur of the moment afternoon thought as I drove home along Highway 14. Had to convince hubby to go and he was very glad I convinced him. Lacey answered the phone and held a table for us while I rounded up a few guests. When we arrived and saw all the vintage western theme throughout, we felt right at home. Lacey greeted and seated us—my husband is in a wheelchair—super friendly and a great welcome. Ordering is easy—what size steak do you want and how do you want it cooked? We each ordered a drink , nice presentation and a decent Caesar. We hit the salad bar and while I am used to getting two plates, another guest offered to get hubby’s choices and then we found out it was one of the owners mother who was out visiting from an Atlantic province. Salad bar offered great choices all made fresh and tasty. Steaks arrived and Lo and behold, all of our steaks were perfectly cooked and for me that seldom happens. Then you take your platter and go up and pick out your hot sides, baby potatoes and a cream sauce that is amazing, baked beans, mushrooms, carmelized onions and garlic toast. We all enjoyed every bite of our steak and dinner. The dessert bar was a fresh fruit salad, chocolate trifle and carrot cake cheesecake pudding and poppy seed chiffon cake. They also had homemade cookies including a Gluten Free choice. All I had room for was a slice of the poppy seed cake which was every bit as good as my Baba used to make. Our friendly owner’s Mom, got hubby everything he wanted for his dinner platter and for dessert. They were at the table next to us and conversation flowed. We already know we are going back in September with another birthday group. This time looks like we are going for steak and shrimp. The atmosphere was friendly with many tables interacting wishing hubby Happy Birthday. We’ll be making the short drive from Vegreville again, maybe even...

With all the reviews, we expected a little better.

When you arrive, you get the low-down on how things work. You order your drinks and tell the waitress how you want your steak cooked. You then head to line 1 under the yellow sign and grab a disposable plate.

There is a nice selection of salads to choose from - taco salad, Caesar salad, macaroni with crab salad, oriental noodle salad, and a matinated vegetable salad, etc. This is the first course.

Then your steak comes on a disposable plate and you head to line 2 under the yellow sign for the sides, crockpot style! Canned, sautéed mushrooms (not impressed with this), dill sauce, baby potatoes, dressed up canned beans (not great), stewed onions, garlic shrimp and garlic bread. Our steaks were all cooked as ordered but for AAA, they seemed a bit tough.

Drinks were reasonably priced. Coffee and tea, come with you meal.

Dessert was a selection of fruit, cookies, lemon poppyseed cake and a couple of different trifles.

The ladies bathroom was a bit of a sticky mess from the floors to the stall door and there is ONLY one stall.

Good service overall but not sure the value is there for $44 per person not including drinks and tip. Would our party drive the 75 minutes to dine there again,...
