Tucked away in the small town of Hazenmore, Saskatchewan, the Red Coat Inn may look like a humble hole-in-the-wall from the outside, but stepping inside is like discovering a hidden gem in the prairies š¾ This place has been on our list for a while, so we made a lunch reservation ahead of time! The Red Coat Inn opens at 11:30 for lunch and they typically see a larger crowd for dinner.
We checked their menu online ahead of time and decided on the Double Hazen Burger with fries and gravy and the 12oz New York Strip with salad, veggies and fried rice.
To start, the salad here is the definition of fresh. Some of the vegetables came straight from the ownersā friendās garden, itās a colorful and crisp mix of greens, peppers tomatoes, cucumbers, and more š„ You can tell that the ingredients are treated with care, as each bite is bursting with flavor. Itās the perfect start to any meal, and you canāt help but appreciate how local and homegrown everything feels.
The New York Strip steak at the Red Coat Inn is an absolute must-try. Cooked to perfection, this steak is tender, juicy, and full of flavour. Look at that CRUST š„¹ We asked for ours medium rare, and it was wall to wall of pink š„© Paired with a side of vegetables and fried rice, itās a meal that feels like comfort food at its finest. The quality of the meat is top-notch, and youāll definitely be coming back for more.
For something more casual but equally mouthwatering, their Double Hazenburger will leave you craving another bite. Two juicy, charred beef patties, bacon, melted cheese, and all the classic toppings, itās a burger that hits the spot every time š„ The bun is soft but sturdy enough to hold the huge patties together, and the flavors are spot-on. You can tell the kitchen takes pride in what they serve, even when itās something as simple as a burger. A helping of crispy fries and gravy is the perfect side to any of their main dishes. The gravy is thick and rich with a hint of beef flavour š
While the Red Coat Inn may be tucked away in a small, unassuming location, itās definitely worth the drive. The combination of friendly service, homegrown ingredients, and expertly cooked simple meals make it a standout in this corner of Saskatchewan. The owners, a couple of warm-hearted individuals with a true passion for food, are the kind of people who instantly make you feel like family. In their words, ākeeping things simpleā is the secret to their delicious food. Their hospitality adds an extra layer of charm to this already delightful spot. If youāre lucky enough to be passing through Hazenmore, you have to stop for a meal at this cozy spot.

What do you get when you take a scenic detour to Hazenmore? A perfect steak and a night that will make you question why you havenāt been eating here every weekend! My boyfriend and I ventured to the Red Coat Inn to investigate the legend of their steak, and let me tell you, the rumors are true.
I ordered mine medium well, with a baked potato and the carrot ginger soup (because who needs salad when you can have soup that tastes like sunshine in a bowl?). The steak arrived with that beautiful crust that every carnivore dreams of. The baked potato? Still piping hot thanks to its foil cocoonābecause, folks, nothing says love like a potato that sticks around for the long haul. The veggies were perfectly cooked, not a mushy mess, and the baguette, oh the baguette! Lightly kissed by the grillājust enough to give you that smoky flavor without crossing over to charcoal territory. It was a delicious trip down memory lane, reminding me of toasting bread on a wood stove as a kid.
To cap it all off, after devouring this masterpiece of a meal, we headed outside under the dark sky to catch a glimpse of the comet. Between the perfectly grilled steak and the cosmic views, the only thing missing was a red carpet to complete our VIP night.
So, if you're wondering whether Hazenmore is worth the extra drive, trust me, it absolutely is. Red Coat Inn has more than earned...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreCall before you go. We travelled a few hundred kilometers to try it after we read good things on FB, only to be met by this sign telling us they were closed at the entrance to town.
My wife had been wanting to give it a try for months and we were looking forward to a good steak. We tried to call ahead, but no one answered. Figured they were busy, or just closed in the afternoon when we called?
Maybe an answering machine message stating you're closed on specific dates...
