We visited recently and had a mixed experience.
Starters: We tried the calamari and chicken wings (around $30 total). The calamari was quite good, especially with the sauces it came with. The chicken wings, however, had an odd flavor—very gingery—but they were at least crispy.
Mains: We ordered a burger ($30–40) and the beef tartare ($30–40), along with poutine instead of fries. The burger was just fine—nothing memorable. Unfortunately, the poutine was the worst I’ve had in Canada: while the gravy itself was nice, the dish was ruined by large cheese chunks and burned onion pieces. The beef tartare was also disappointing—don’t order it if you’re used to French or European tartare. Here it’s more like bar food (small beef pieces mixed with pickles and sauce) but charged at refined bistro prices.
We also tried swapping the side salad for their “Italian salad” (+$6), but it wasn’t worth it: just cucumbers, mozzarella, and tomato covered in mediocre pesto.
Drinks & Bill: With two beers and a mocktail, the total came to about $160 with tax. For a two-course meal of this quality, the pricing felt steep.
Service: Our waiter was very kind throughout, but at the end he told us that a 15% tip was expected. While I understand tipping customs in Quebec, being told what to tip—especially after a $160 bill for food that was mediocre at best—felt uncomfortable and misplaced.
Overall: This place charges bistro prices for bar-quality food. The atmosphere and service were friendly, but the food simply didn’t justify the cost.
Regarding the atmosphere, I can imagine it being very nice with the view during the day but we sat inside because it was quite cold out and there was a very loud group so we didn’t enjoy it as much as would normally be the...
Read moreWe liked this place, been there twice during one short vacation. On the positive note: waiters are very friendly . The view is beautiful ! Like in Tuscany. Calamari, salmon tartar and deer tartar are excellent. Vegetable wrap was very good, but should’ve been grilled. I ate half in the restaurant and took another half home and grilled it, it became 100% better. On the negative note: Almost each dish is accompanied with French fries which are always overdone, almost burnt. Tried 2 desserts: both are not tasty at all. Poor man pudding (translated as unemployed pudding) is bland and too sweet, I won’t employ this pudding too:) Cheesecake is gooey and too sweet as well. Doors in the toilet are not closing properly. I saw many women struggling with the doors. The thing is: there is no incentives for the owner to improve things . There is no competition in L’Anse st. Jean, because there are 3 restaurants in the whole area. There is always a line...
Read moreThis restaurant is a bit hidden and will probably make you think youre in the wrong place, but thats because its hidden behind some houses to be closer to the water! There's a lot of space for kids to run around, you have a great view over the river and a waterfall. The house is old and modest, but very charming. The food was phenomenal. We ate the game tartar appetizer, oystermushroom pizza, game poutine and poor mans pie, all of it was bursting with flavour. Their ingredients are locally sourced, the portions have a good size, and they give beer (from the local microbrewery) recommendations with each dish. Sitting outside in the evenings isnt a problem because they have heat lamps. All in all, it was very high quality but still affordable....
