We stopped by here as they were having a local musician play here and it was a short walk from our place. This was one of the few places in the area open in the evening as well.
The service from the staff was great. Nikita greeted us from behind the bar and we ended up sitting at an inside table as all outside were taken before people left then we moved outside. I ordered from her at the bar as the 2 servers were being run off their feet serving all the tables. We ordered 2 flights of Quidi Vidi beers and some food.
My wife ordered the Iceberg, Calm Tom (subbed for Squeezebox), DayBoil and Raspberry Creamsicle Sour (subbed for Peach Pineapple Sour). I ordered the Iceberg, Crown & Anchor, DayBoil and Raspberry Creamsicle Sour. My wife liked all but her favourite was the Raspberry Creamsicle Sour while I love the Crown & Anchor! We both enjoyed the Iceberg as well!
I told her we had moved outside and gave our table number so she brought the food out to us. We ordered cod nuggets (deep fried fish nuggets) and poutine to share. The fish was crunchy on the outside and tender on the inside so just perfect! The poutine had nice crispy fries with gooey cheese and some tasty gravy so also hit the mark!
The musician was Michael McDonald, not from the Doobie Brothers but a local guy with the same name. He did some great covers of songs and had a friend (Jamie?) do a great cover of a Janis Joplin song, Me & Bobby McGee which everyone enjoyed! He also had a great sense of humour. He’s the drummer for Anchors Aweigh who normally plays regular shows up in Rocky Harbour but also sings solo on the side.
The second time we stopped by here we just had a pint inside as it had been rainy earlier though had stopped but everyone was inside. We sat at the bar which gave us a great seat for the local musician Angus Stewart who performed local Newfoundland songs. He was a great singer with a good sense of humour. My wife had the Raspberry Creamsicle Sour while I had the Crown & Anchor.
This place is a great spot to get some good food, have a pint and let some local artists...
Read moreWe went to purchase 4 boat tour tickets and grab a bite to eat. The boat tour ticket booth was unoccupied. We had fully intended purchase the tickets and then eat dinner here, but not after what we saw while waiting in line. The bar was also the kitchen with everything on display. We watched waitstaff take food from the freezer and reheat it in a tiny oven/ microwave behind the bar. We waited in line at the counter to talk to someone about purchasing tickets. The line to order begins at the entrance door, it was complete chaos with people coming in and out, ordering and paying. After 15min of waiting in line, we were told to go back to the booth and that we'd be helped after she "pours these 6 beers". We tell her sure, not a problem. But 15min go by waiting at the booth and our waitress is nowhere to be seen. I walk back in the food line to inquire with another waitress. The second waitress apologizes and tracks the first waitress down for us. First waitress comes and asks us to wait another 10min and to "order a few beers while you're here". At this point we just wanted to simply purchase boat tickets. $400 worth of tickets, mind you. We told her we really couldn't wait for longer than we already had without being late for the boat (now that we had to find a different place for dinner). She sighed and found a third waitress to help us instead. We met the third waitress at the booth, where she picked up our tickets but then instructed us to go back inside to pay for the tickets at the counter. It was a lot of running around,...
Read moreWe had a nice experience here for several reasons. First, we visited on a beautiful, warm (not hot) sunny day, sat on the deck where we could enjoy the beautiful water views, and were entertained by great local musicians. We ordered food and beverages, and if that were the extent of our experience, this would be a 2-Star review. The two women fulfilling the orders were working furiously and probably doing the best they could considering there probably should have been at least 4 employees, not 2. The ordering process was disorganized and frenetic, and the order fulfilling process seemed to be based on whatever could be served the fastest. The ladies were working very hard and seemed overwhelmed, so I don’t entirely fault them. But it was quite a cluster. Interesting to note that the performer commented several times on the gorgeous view from her perspective. The way the staging is configured, the performer looks out onto the water, and the customers, if actually watching the musicians, watch with their backs to the water. I’m not sure there is a fix to this as the power supply is logically next to the building, but it struck me as backward that we were sitting outside on a deck that overlooked the water and mountains, but were not really able to appreciate that unless our backs were to...
