I have been coming to this place since 1999 and have seen it go from a small bakery/café to one of my favourite restaurants over the last 8 years. I've also seen it through three owners. When I heard it had been sold 3 years ago ( about that I think) I was worried because it was such a great experience to go there. Always great food, service and reasonable prices. I didnt want it to change. The Double D burger, the turkey dinner and the grilled cheese were my favourite things. All excellent. Having just come from my first meal there this summer I have to say that i'm extremely disappointed. It's gone from being my favourite restaurant to one that I probably won't go to again. Gone are the Double D burger and the turkey dinner. There is now a smash burger on the menu for $24. In my opinion that's too much for a burger. So I figured I'd go for the grilled cheese. The last time I had one there with the previous owner it was delicious. Lots of cheese and 3 different kinds grilled on a panini press. This time I got a grilled cheese sandwich like you'd make for yourself at home. What looked like wonder bread with American slices of cheese was what I got. $11. Because all you got was a sandwich, no fries or anything I ordered a side of coleslaw. I got a tiny cup of coleslaw maybe 2" in diameter for $3. I thought our waiter had forgotten the side because it looked like what usually comes with a sandwich. But no, that was my side of coleslaw. I wish I had have taken a picture because it was laughable what I got for $14. Nothing special but just like what you'd get at the old Woolworths lunch counters. The one bright spark was the butter tart I had for dessert. It was EXCELLENT. I'm glad the new owner kept those. I'm not sure if the new owners are concentrating more on the bakery side of things but the quality of the restaurant has definitely gone down. I'm so disappointed because it was one place I could always count on having a good meal. So in a nutshell my food was mediocre and overpriced....
Read moreGreat little spot. Bumped into a fella I met a few times. Chef Ted Reader. He and I volunteered at a summer camp for children who’ve suffered burn injuries. Great guy. We also were at a Nickelback concert. Although he wouldn’t acknowledge he was who he said he was at the time. lol. Don’t blame the guy. He probably just wanted to enjoy the show. Great guy. Even better were the times for purchase inside. Beautiful and quality products! A great surprising treat for yourself. The whole vibe of the restaurant and patio. Nice green fresh grass, rolling hill, down to the deep, blue, cool sea. Music outside was nice and only improved the mood here. We were rolling in our trucks and 5th wheel and kinda blocked the end of the parking lot and couldn’t stick around very long. Also we had our two beagles in truck. What cock-a-mania good time!! 😉😉(see what I did there) lol
Great place. Spoke with the owner briefly and friendly, professional lady. Good luck. Hope you have a record season!! I especially love the door bell when you walk in. You have to go in and see...
Read moreOur recent visit to The Clucking Hen Cafe was quite underwhelming, especially given the high praise it received from several friends. Located in the middle of nowhere, we had high hopes for a hidden gem, but unfortunately, it didn't live up to the hype.
The seafood chowder was the first letdown. It was packed with potatoes and carrots, leaving little room for the seafood, which is supposed to be the star of the dish. It felt more like a potato chowder than anything else. However, when I brought this to their attention, the staff was kind enough to replace it with another bowl that was slightly better but still nothing extraordinary.
My wife opted for a Greek salad, which was, like the chowder, just average. We also tried some baked goodies, hoping for a highlight, but they, too, were simply average.
Overall, The Clucking Hen Cafe provided an experience that was mediocre at best. While the staff was courteous and responsive to feedback, the food quality was not enough to warrant a return visit. Hence, a 3-star rating feels appropriate for this...
