Hewitt's Dairy Limited was founded by James Hewitt and began operations in 1887. Hewitt's Dairy Bar opened in 1962. The company was sold to Gay Lea Foods in 2014. It was sold again to Dairy Fountain Incorporated in 2025. As a result of these transactions, I can't help but wonder if the company has strayed from the original values and priorities of the founder in the name of profit. For example, goat milk products are what separate Hewitt's from their competitors. Will the new owner decide to discontinue their goat milk, yogourt, ice cream, and butter? Will some of the 60 ice cream flavours at the dairy bar be scaled back to benefit the bottom line? I hope not.

As of now, it's still a place that I stop at whenever I'm heading to Port Dover. It's conveniently located right on Highway 6 and makes for a perfect halfway point to stretch the legs and have a delicious ice cream. The Dairy Bar is surrounded by scenic farms, offers ample parking spaces, and outdoor seating. The line tends to be long, but the wait is very worthwhile. My recommendation is to take a picture of the menu board so that you can zoom in on it while standing in line. You'll want to have a good idea of what you'd like to order before you get to the front because it gets chaotic and stressful. Multiple employees will be taking orders from multiple customers who will each be moving up and down the line in order for them to see all of the flavours.

If you like ice cream, you simply will not be disappointed by the overwhelming number of options (year-round and seasonal flavours such as pumpkin pie and eggnog), the serving sizes, the value for the money, and the rich and creamy taste. Hewitt's Dairy Bar is a little piece of Canadiana. It is a must-visit for anyone who...

Visited this place for a chocolate milkshake. Two things that happened which made me think that why did I even have to make a stop there.

There was big line for the desserts. Until just before me they served the customers quick. When it was my turn, one short girl came from the food area, took my order which was a thick chocolate milkshake and left me there without taking care of my order. The people behind me had their orders being filled and were leaving while I was still standing there just for one milkshake. The other two girls that were serving other customers didn’t even bother to check my order.

The second thing is the milkshake itself. The menu board just said vanilla, chocolate and strawberry shakes. I thought the chocolate would be purely chocolate milkshake and I ordered it ā€˜thick’ considering that it would be extra thick. But to my surprise they did like 85% vanilla +15% chocolate milkshake. When asked one of the girls said that’s how they do it. If that’s the case put it on the menu board about the combination. Why to even list it out as chocolate in the first place when you already have a separate vanilla item?

It was an absolute waste of time and money adding to a total disappointment. Will not...

We love Hewitt's milk and ice cream. We decided to get lunch today, I got the meat pie with gravy, husband got a whistledog, we also got a fry and onion rings to share. I got a chocolate milk and hubby got a cherry shake. It cost over $40 but we were happy. The pie wasn't huge but nice flavor, crust was cooked well and the gravy was plentiful and had a good taste that went well with the pie and when I dipped a fry in also. The onion rings were a think cut beer batter that had a nice sweetness. The Fry's were close to a stake cut maybe a bit thinner, they had an old school diner feel, they were cooked well and nicely seasoned. The whistledog was just a regular size hot dog but the bacon was real think cut bacon, good amount of cheese and they didn't skimp on the toppings. They ask what you want and dress it for you. The shake had a great cherry flavor that wasn't fake. The chocolate milk was delicious as always and tastes like real chocolate not a cheap candy bar. You can eat in at the counter if there is room and you don't mind sitting next to a stranger or like we did get it to go and they have picnic tables around the back. They have scooped ice cream and other specials like banana splits. Over all...
