Hippos is without a doubt one of the Best summer stops on your drive along Lake Erie. The food is excellent, not greasy, portions are a good size and the staff go to great lengths to get the order right. My wife and I visit on a weekly basis and we find the meals are consistent in size and quality. The owner, Steve is professional and relaxed while his staff are well versed in their daily tasks. Everyone pulls together when the place is busy. Considering the on-going rule changes regarding Covid restrictions, the owner and staff have been accommodating and caring for everyone's safety. The cost of a meal and drink are reasonable considering the price of food and supplies has increased substantially over the past year. Hippo's continues to be a landmark restaurant in the hamlet of Lowbanks that you should consider a "must visit" on your next journey along the shores of Lake Erie.

Hippos is a true local staple, perfect for those who live in the area or are up at the cottage. Located right on the water, it offers almost entirely outdoor terrace seating, which makes for an unbeatable atmosphere. It’s always busy, so finding a table can sometimes be a challenge, but that’s part of its lively charm. The menu is classic casual fare, think well-done, slightly greasy comfort food that fits perfectly with the setting. You don’t really come here just for the food, though. You come for the fun, relaxed vibe and the one-of-a-kind lakeside experience. Hippos has been serving both locals and newcomers for years, and it continues to be a go-to spot for a laid-back day on the water.

Great lunch today! My husband was able to visit last summer, but I haven't been since the year before. New layout with a lot more space for tables and chairs. Lots of shady spots to sit and eat. Lunch was delicious. I had the halibut and chips and my hubby had the pickerel tacos, which he raved about. All the fish was tender and flavourful, the breading was not too thick and nice and crisp. Fries were hot and fresh, even the coleslaw was really good, very crisp and vinegary. Service was friendly and efficient, the bartender was working her butt off! The view and atmosphere are amazing. Such a relaxing, fun place for lunch. We'll be back!

I do not know what changed from last year to this year but something has. I love this place so much that I hate to complain. I will assume this was a bad day to visit and try again in a few weeks.

Seemed very disorganized this year other than a young lady right on top of cleaning and clearing tables doing a great job of freeing tables, I have never seen someone wipe the condiments too, awesome.

Lining up forever at bar behind two people for a beer that was half poured out of a mostly empty pitcher and half from tap, apparently they changed keg so we get warmed flat beer mixed with some fresh. After getting water from inside store with sign saying pay at bar, lining up again for 20 minutes to pay for water. Slowest person on register ever, and they are working bar alone. This was a huge complaint from other people sitting close by too.

Food took a while but whatever, place was mostly full. Haddock was extremely greasy to point I had to pour out molten oil. This is not normal at all, new cooks? rushing? Chips were not hot at all only warmed by fish I think. Not sure if they changed Malt Vinegar but it has no taste. Tarter sauce has become almost 100% Mayonnaise and not what we were used to.

Overall, if I had not come so many times before and had a great experience I would not visit again. I really hope this was either a one off or they step up their...

So, last year this was a favourite spot of mine! Gluten free chicken fingers! Wine in little bottles, water, sun or shade, good food, fun music! Today we went and I must say it was disappointing:( First and foremost no masks were worn by the patio staff/ beverage server. The cook did which was good! There was no routine of cleaning tables with disinfectant during our visit. I saw one table wiped with a wet cloth. I cleaned my own table with lysol wipes and used my own hand sanitizer . Customers were not careful to social distancing. .moving tables etc. My order was two very small chicken fingers. Not sure if they were GF or not? They were good, but little. I had substituted onion rings for fries but didn't know I would be charged $1.50 more. Very greasy. The fish was good but the fries had no flavour..and were greasy too..heavy. We had to go back and ask for ketchup, vinegar.. So, I am hoping hand sanitizer will be added to the bathroom, staff wear masks when serving you, a way better effort in cleaning tables, and customers get the idea that we still have to be careful! And..some fresh oil. Not sure what changed, management? but I am hoping this was a one-off and when I come back it will improve.. Thanks...

I visited Hippo's yesterday evening before heading back to Toronto after a weekend visiting family in the area. I often bring people here because of the amazing views and delicious Lake Erie perch. We waited over an hour for our food and when our number was called instead of getting the food we ordered I was told at the pick-up counter that there was an issue with the coleslaw and I needed to talk to the cashier. The cashier said it wasn't the coleslaw, they actually ran out of perch and offered me a refund or to order something different. I go to Hippo's specifically for the perch and so I asked for a refund and left. My boyfriend then realised that they had kept the tip and so we returned to get that back as well and I was pretty disappointed when I realised the girl at the counter seemingly intentionally tried to keep the tip by giving me the refund on the till receipt vs. the credit card receipt with the tip noted. I was incredibly disappointed by the level of service last night, and I hope that greater care will be taken going forward to monitor inventory and communicate with...
