On a dull Saturday afternoon, the wife and I went for a drive to find butter tarts for our Thanksgiving feast. After being disappointed with a sellout at The Butter Tart Empire Bakery on Hwy 45 in the  Alderville First Nation, we decided to take the long route to Doo Doo’s in Bailieboro. This meant going over Rice Lake through Keene, ON. That turned out to be a most excellent idea as we came across Muddy’s Pit BBQ. I’m just going to keep it simple. Make the trip to Keene…eat at Muddy’s…send me thanks. Oh…you’re still here reading…GO TO KEENE AND EAT AT MUDDY’S!!! Brisket – well prepared, lightly peppered though. For those that like heavy pepper on their brisket…you will need to supplement yourself. Finding brisket that isn’t sawdust in Ontario isn’t easy…here we have a winner. Pulled Pork – well prepared, no mush texture to the pulled pork and very little sauce. For those who like a ‘sloppy’ pulled pork…well they have a couple of sauces for you to try. It’s also not chunky…which is fine by me. Sausage – Again, well prepared. My wife liked it better than me…she does have a better palate than me. Pork Ribs – I’m sure this is getting annoying…but again…prepared well. They are a little over for me…that’s a personal thing. Almost a pork version of burnt ends. Tasty to be sure…just not my style. And again…my wife loved them. They are just the way she loves them. Chili – delicious. That’s all I can say Baked Beans – Also delicious. Our absolute favourite dish of the weekend from Muddy’s was he Smoked Bologna. Yup…you read that right. If you love fried bologna sandwiches and also love BBQ…you must…MUST try this stuff. In short, I’d place Muddy’s on par with Teddy Reader’s place in Brooklyn, ON or even Tail O' The Pup in the Lake Placid, NY area. Different but equally god!

The best BBQ in Ontario (and Canada) along with Memphis BBQ in Vaughan. This location is very similar to the "rib joints" you find in the southern United States. Not much to look at on the outside but the food is what counts most and the facilities are clean. Note they only accept cash or debit as payment. I tried a pound of ribs for $11.50 plus HST. This is the same as ordering a half rack. What separates this from the typical BBQ in Canada (i.e. 99% of rib joints) is the BBQ sauce. They have the regular sauce and a slightly hotter sauce. If you don't believe me, visit the best BBQ joints in the Virginias, the Carolinas, George, Tennessee, and Texas and you'll understand perfectly. Don't order the tap water because it's well water. Overall, I rate Muddy's Pit BBQ an 8 out of 10. The only negative is the location which is about an hour and half drive from Toronto. Free parking is available onsite and you can park along the road as well.

hop out the car and you’re immediately hit with delicious smokey smells. Lots of options on the menu, including pork, beef, mac and cheese and poutine. Our beef brisket sandwich and medium chilli nachos came out to about $30. The menu and sizing can be a bit confusing as everything is priced by weight, also slowing down the ordering process. The young man taking orders would also take each order then immediately make the food, rather than taking the orders of a group then making food. Where they lack in efficiency, they make up for in food quality and flavour. All the food was made to perfection and delicious! We sat in the sheltered outdoor patio area, where there are large picnic tables. I imagine you’d need to share a table with others during busier times. Very rural feel that we enjoyed, I’d definitely recommend stopping by for lunch or dinner if you’re in the area.

Very disappointing, food was VERY OVERPRICED and on top of the price they expect you to tip, flavor was mediocre, nothing was hot,for a barbeque spot you wouldn't expect to have your food at room temperature,we visited at around 6 pm and to not have fresh food at that time of day and at that price point was a let down,we spent almost $90 and left with half bag of food, this was my First and Last time visiting this place,it will benefit you to skip this spot and make the 40 min drive to Yorkies barbeque, there you will find quality and fair price and a much wider selection.

UPDATE: Judging from your response as the owner now I'm completely satisfied with my review and I'm pretty sure all the people who's going to read this review will be able to make up their own minds based on your reply. As the OWNER it is YOUR responsibility to make sure YOUR establishment provides quality food at a fair price point ,not mine,in your own words "Good Riddance". As the proprietor of a business if you can't take constructive criticism and use it as an opportunity to improve your service and quality then you should not be in business, try reading all your reviews again. Yorkies barbeque ,the owner there actually cares about their customers experience and can take constructive criticism without attacking their guests.

Another Update: It would appear that you're the type of owner who only likes to be patted on the back and can't take criticism when it is warranted, you attack anyone who doesn't leave you a good review, but I'll tell you like it is ,your food is garbage and tasteless, just so you understand the food we bought from your establishment was thrown out yesterday because nobody wanted it. The review I left was fair and just because you "didn't like the wording" it does not mean I was wrong, that's something you and your bruised ego have to deal with, what makes me smile when I read your response is that you don't understand just how deep a hole you're digging your self into, the amount of damage you're doing to yourself and your business is uncalculable,I have nothing to lose you do,think about how many potential customers you have probably already lost not because of my review but because of your response. Yorkies was delicious, thanks for your concern,we were still hungry after we left your place so we had to make the trip and get some quality food.

Another Another Update: Guess I must be getting under your skin if you're checking your competitors reviews, you should stop by sometime and get some cooking tips so when you overcharge your customers they will actually be getting something quality from your kitchen instead of that dried out tasteless garbage you serve, you would also learn a few things on how to interact with your customers and take fair criticism graciously. Lastly I never claimed to be a longtime Yorkies customer, but just like when I visited your garbage dump Yorkies also left an impression on me but for very different reasons, namely because they produce quality food. I never claimed to be a foodie, you don't have to be like Anthony Bourdain to know what good or bad food is,If he had your so called barbeque he might have killed himself sooner,I mean it's really bad. Google reviews is just that,a forum for leaving reviews granted they might not all be fair and honest but I believe mine was until it descended into a school yard argument where I feel I was picking on the special needs kid. I did leave a fair review before things turned nasty and I even gave you some two and three star ratings in other categories but when you lashed out like a spoiled toddler it all went to one star, yet again something you caused, all of this could have been prevented if you had just replied as a responsible mature business owner we could could have then had a constructive adult dialogue, but you chose an alternate route. If you didn't learn a lesson from this then fire back another ignorant reply and I'll make sure you regret you did,I haven't gone social media yet.

Update 4.0 It's really sad how pathetic you are, I'm...

You can smell it before you see it!

Muddy's Pit BBQ was a smokey little roadside restaurant nestled among the rolling hills of South-Monaghan. It featured a butchery style ordering counter where you pay by weight of the different cuts of meat you'd like (all piping hot out of the smoker, slow cooking to tender perfection). Decorated from the rafters of the wooden shack to the dirt floor of the outdoor patio, Muddy's is a step into the portrait of Southern Pit Cooking and the community it fed. Adorned with fishing lures, taxidermy animals , framed photos of prize pigs to an old arcade machine, the interior of Muddy's is both warm and inviting, with pungent aroma of barbecue wafting gently through the rustic house.

The food was bursting with flavour, both in its spice choices and sauce selection. The pork was melt in your mouth, and the side salads were creamy and had a fresh crunch (probably due to the fact Muddy's has a garden just out back). Attached are photos of 'The Lunker' and 'The Carnivore Sampler', as well as some behind the scenes photos I was graciously given the opportunity to make by the staff of Muddy's.

Washing it all down with a craft beer and a game of Donkey Kong on the arcade, it is safe to say Muddy's is a true gem of the Ontario countryside. Would recommend this to anyone who is okay with some meat...
