Stopped by Aucoin Bakery with my wife last week on our trip to Cape Breton. We went early around 8am on a Thursday morning so there was no line up. Got ourselves 4 items: a blueberry scone, a blueberry and apple turnover and a sugar donut.
Ate the sugar donut shortly in the day. It was fluffy and moist. It had a light texture and was not doughy at all. We liked this 3rd of the 4 items. It was pretty good still.
The blueberry scone... delish. If you like scones, try this. It doesn't crumble at the first bite like most scones usually would (only slightly) and it was fluffy and not dried out. Not to mention this was about the size of my fist so its a good amount. We didn't eat it until the next day and reheated it in the air fryer and it was still good. We liked this the most of the 4 items.
We both liked the blueberry turnover also as it wasn't too sweet and the pastry was still crisp even though we didn't eat it until around 3pm that day at the airport. This was ranked number 2 for us.
The apple turnover was almost like an apple pie texture and if you like chunks of melted apple, then this is for you. We liked it overall but it's slightly on the sweeter side. Pastry was also crisp when we ate it at 3pm. Ranked 4th overall.
Sorry we forgot to take pictures. Looks the same as the other turnovers and scones people have posted. 😅
Overall experience, give it a try and if you like scones... buy a...
Read moreCaroline and I dropped in for an early lunch on our way home from riding the Cabot Trail. There was a small lineup as their maximum amount of customers allowed inside is limited to three persons at a time, but I found myself wishing I had more room in my luggage as I witnessed the staff preparing the breads in the back.
Caroline ordered a glazed cinnamon roll and a Smoked meat on rye sandwich, with a coffee, while I couldn’t pass up a cheese croissant with a Smoked meat on rye.
Just outside there are a couple of picnic tables so we were able to remove our masks and enjoy the food in comfort.
The croissant was amazing! Had I known how wonderful, I would have bought a half dozen to take with me! Caroline shared her cinnamon roll with me, and we both enjoyed the sandwiches. Their rye is made with caraway and turned it into a signature sandwich that we both enjoyed.
I’ve added this is a waypoint so we can stop in and sample more of their breads...
Read moreWe waited for them to open one morning, not knowing that they only open at 9am. It was well worth the wait. Everything we bought was delicious, so you really can’t go wrong with whatever you want to buy. We tried the Apple fritter, Apple turnover, chocolate croissant, the cranberry cake and a mix selection of desert bars. All was delicious and I have to say really cheap too. We are from Montreal and prices here for the same kind of pastries is easily double or even triple the price.
In any case, the store is small and there will most likely be a wait. There’s extra parking across the street. Some stuff will sell put if you go later in the day. Highly recommended if you are in Cape Breton and will be...
