The service at Gus’s Pub is top-notch—seriously, 5 stars to the hardworking ladies running the floor. They’re attentive, friendly, and really keep the place moving. Unfortunately, that’s where the high points end. The cocktails? Meh. Nothing really tasted the way it should. Same story with the food. It all felt like someone tried a few dishes 30 years ago, then attempted to recreate them from memory and explain them to someone else who’s never cooked before. Expectations will not be met here. Caesar salad came with bacon, sure, but was a soggy letdown. The “crab dip” was mostly sour cream with crab sticks pretending to be the real thing. You get the idea. If you go, stick to their beer—it’s solid. And maybe grab a chicken sandwich. It won’t blow your mind, but at least it’ll be passable.

I am staying in Port McNiel this weekend and although there is not alot in the way of dinner options, Gus's Pub was a pleasant surprise. There were only 2 servers on for about 15 tables so there was a bit of a wait. This is to be expected during this labour shortage that most of the hospitality is experiencing. This being said, my halibut and chips were done perfectly! The halibut portion was very generous and the ratio of fish to batter was perfect. I would definitely go back again and try something else on the menu.

During our fishing trips to Alder Bay we make sure to have at least one dinner at Gus's Pub because the food is really good. Great service and excellent craft beer too. This photo is/was of the very first time we visited and you can probably figure out why I took it. I have yet to be disappointed!!

Judging by the rest of their recent reviews, our experience was not unusual. Drinks took 20 minutes, food took over an hour, and they weren’t even that busy. Asked for a refill on my coffee, which I never did get. When our food finally did come, we asked where our Calimari was, our waitress looked stunned for a second and then quickly told us that they were out
even though we ordered it an hour ago??? Then she came back a couple of minutes later and said that it was actually rung through under the wrong table. My guess is she forgot it and was trying to cover it up. Mistakes happen, I get it, but she handled it terribly by trying to lie about it and then basically pretending like it never happened. She barely had an apology and just smiled and walked away. We didn’t see her again until we went inside to find her and get our bill.

My takeaway from the whole experience: This place has so much potential, but management needs to have more of a presence there and take a serious interest in their customers satisfaction. They have lots of new young staff, and there doesn’t seem to be anyone giving them direction. Also, If you can’t serve 10 tables their food in less than an hour, don’t seat 20? Because now you have 20 tables that are going to go home and write these awful reviews. We saw many people sit down, get frustrated and just leave.

The sad part is the food was actually decent, but the service was one of the worst restaurant experiences I’ve ever had. I really hope they turn things around, but we won’t be back...

If I could give zero stars I would. We rode the whole day, got our hotel and all we wanted was to have a nice meal and go back to the hotel to rest. We got to the restaurant at 6:20 pm At 7 they waitress finally came out, but just to let us know our food was on its way. We asked why is taking so long and she said, we have a big table ahead of you. The restaurant was not even half full. We waited another 30 minutes and I went inside to ask where our food was. She said we have a big table ahead of you. I told her, you said that 30 minutes ago. Her response was “yeah sorry “ Worse place ever, horrible customer service. It’s so sad that after such a long time without tourists, this is how we are treated as a welcome back. I’ve never been here before, and my experience with that restaurant makes me never want to come back. We tried to go to a different restaurant but because it was 7:45 and most restaurants in the area close at 8, there we’re close for new customers. We ended up going to subway . They should be thankful they are open for business and the owners certainly should have a talk with their waitresses with regards of their customers service skills. ZERO...
