a couple of weekends back in early mid-January i road trips from Montreal to St Lazare to go to Rubes restaurant on a Saturday. The rains were so heavy with rain warnings in effect including some flooding, that I was surprised to see that many cars in the road, but there was nobody in the restaurant accept myself and my gal pal road trip friend. the service was superb and the music was lovely through the speakers without the noise of a full restaurant which often is the case. We were seated by the fireplacein the side of the restaurant near the glass enclosure which would normally let in some cold but we were nice and cozy. The owner himself mr. Lee Michaelson, passed by to add a couple of extra logs quipping that these were the last logs and next would be the furniture LOL.although I've always found the coffee to be now the same as it was when I took my mother there years ago on mother's Day when it was indeed, packs to the bolt, my younger man hangoverwas not assuaged by their coffee and I remember very years ago asking the waitress if it perhaps was caffeine mated removed as in decaf cuz my heart wasn't stepping up and there was no caffeine that I could feel flowing through my veins. The coffee had a particularly not quite coffee like flavouring. I recognize the coffee many years later this January 20/20. But other than a tasty warmbeverage that didn't hit me like coffee and get my heart going in my blood flowing with caffeine in it, everything else was absolutely superb! The music was a good choice and the speakers were excellent and the warmth of the heat near the fireplace with had four sided open Glass, was perfect and the plates were very pretty beautifully served a very attractive looking and extremely tasty. My friend who is a very picky eater, and it always surprises me how she could findalmost every type of food not to her liking, actually ate the whole thing and then did it take home with she never does. The fries were a little bitoily and undercooked mind you but there was still pretty good and they drained off quickly in the dish. They actually brought us our food very, but no surprise there since there was nobody else there at that lunch during the rainstorm Lovely to get such exquisite and our waitress was a blast with mild clips of real human contact, which is a nice change. Certainly the coffee is unimpressive but who cares when everything else was sowonderful. Just be aware that you'll pay over $30 with tax and tip, or more, for a small plate with a lovely giant hamburger or a beautifully served two slices of salmon over something or other with a very attractively designed conglomeration of food. With a beer or other drinks, it would have been a heck of a lot more. Personally speaking, the hamburger I had on my plate was exquisite and very large. In comparison, I think of the willows in where I had a beer and a piece of cake along with my hamburger plate with exquisite fries and a very small hamburger and I paid more than $55 over there. Is the Hudson St Lazare area restaurants conglomeration suddenly becoming high-end and pricey? Well there still is NOKORYA in that shopping centre in the corner off of exit 28... But it's one plate for under $16 I guess? And it's a BYO restaurant but she gives you the BUMS RUSH. Or perhaps compare it to Old orchardrestaurant on Oakland avenue in Montreal on a weekday with her lunch special of a hamburger and it's only $12.50. however there's nothing like the experience of going to Rube' s restaurant. And if you like ribs then remember that they have exquisite home smoke delicious ribs that compete with the best of anybody. Plus the charm of the place setting the countryside is also a treat. And that side of the restaurantwith a glass enclosure almost all around one end showing you the woods and the green trees or in this case it was rainy but still trees none the less, is something you'll never get in Montreal. We enjoyedthe lunch and the quality of the food and the fun service being the only clients there and the warmth of...
Read moreWe stopped by randomly since we were going from Voyageur park back to Montreal and this restaurant was right in the middle. We did not have high expectations judging by the location, there is not much around there, but we were wrong!
This place was amazing!!
Food: We got a mushroom puff pasty appetizer to share for 2 people, it was a small appetizer, barely 2 bites each, but it was DELICIOUS, highly recommend it if they still have it on the menu. For the main course I got the seafood with rice, it was tasty but nothing out of the ordinary. But what was heavenly was the cabbage salad that it came with, i am not a big fan of cabbage but that salad was just something else, I didn't even realize it was cabbage until I asked the waiter at the end. My partner got a fillet mignon cheeseburger, which was very simple, just cheese and meat, but it was HEAVENLY. They used good ingredients, every bit would just melt in your mouth, highly recommend.
Service and ambience: The service was good. The waiters were attentive, bilingual, polite and even dressed quiet well making the place seem fancy. The ambience was alright, it was clean and the bathrooms were clean as well.
Tldr; if you are around there and have time to sit and enjoy your food, i would highly recommend. If I am ever close by, I would...
Read moreMy first impression was amazing, Place feels very warm and cozy. I was place next to the fire place which made my wife very happy.
I myself ordered I need a rib steak and my wife ordered the filet mignon with the $18 extra shrimp. And because I knew this was a Smokehouse I really wanted to try the ribs so I ordered them too.
Although the ambience was quite amazing the food was not as amazing as I thought.
My steaks came perfectly cooked no complaints there but it was very bland no flavor at all. And so was my wife's steak. Guess it's not what I'm used to they did have steak spice on the table but it just wasn't the same.
And when we saw the size of the shrimp we got for $18 we thought it was kind of a rip off until it only 3 pieces very small.
The ribs they were amazing.
I've been wanting to try this restaurant for a while since I live in the area.
I might give it another chance but I will have to order something different or ask for them to cook it with spice. I myself when I go out I like to eat a steak. I did turn around from going to The Keg because I saw that on their own line menu did they had clams but when we got there it was no longer on the menu so that was a little bit disappointing.
So maybe the next time I will go it will be worth it actually...
