I had my wedding last week June 12. It was beautiful and almost perfect. Me and Ray the manager planned for this event. Here are my concerns that could be improve for the future.
I arrived with a full parking and doesât know where to park. A reserve parking should have been made at least for me and my bride. Ray opened a parking spot upon I mention it to my coordinator. They had another event at the big hall with 300 guest but 600 people arrived. I wish they informed me about having an event at the bighall as a heads up.
Ceremony chairs were facing the wrong way, and the wedding welcome sign, table with umbrella basket placed at the wrong spot. It was on the big hall near entrance, it should be at the big lawn - Ray and his team arranged this. Good thing my table decorator was there, decided to stay and offered to fix the chairs and put the signage at the correct place.
I saw that the sunroom door weren't covered by a divider which me and Ray agreed that he will. I reminded him that day upon noticing it and he put the divider right away for guest not to see it. Thanks for that.
About the Food: Reception time, the food was delayed. I know that the food quality was one of the priority but given I informed and emailed Ray about my timeline, this shouldn't happened.
I only had 36 pax including us the couple, the chicken cordon blue was not enough at the first part. Some of my guest didn't get it. The refill took so long which ended up guest were full already by the time refill arrived. - my guest told me the chaffing dish was not full. Given that I only had 36 guest including us couple, a refill shouldn't be needed. The chafing dish was BIG AND should BE FULL enough to serve 36 pax for one round.
a printed menu was agreed to me made by Ray, I was there a day before the wedding and reminded him again about it. But there was no menu on the table on the wedding day. My guest didn't even know what drinks I have prepared, that I have iced tea and refillable soda order. Most of them ended up drinking water only. Wine was served and coffee tea. I wanted a printed menu at the very first and reason I got from Ray was he didn't print as it doesn't match my glossy thank you card I have prepared. THIS WAS AN INVALID REASON as I donât expect a fancy menu and I agreed that it will be just printed on a black ink and white paper that will my match my black tie theme.
I was so surprised when Ray said on the email that he was not aware of majestic rentals doing decor outside for the ceremony. Ray, I told you about this and if you want to check our email convos. Even the moving of 6 bouquets flowers to the sunroom. You suggested that you will do that. But again thank you for my decorator and she did the moving of the decors.
I was charged for 9 suppliers meal when I only have 8 vendors.
Ray waived my ceremony fee. Thank you for that.
Overall it was a great wedding but it could have been perfect if things some werenât forgotten.
The food was great!!! My guest loved it but I feel bad to those who weren't able to try the chicken...
Read moreWe had an amazing experience having our wedding at The Gates this past August. We were totally blown away by everything that Nadine, Ray, and the rest of the team at The Gates did to ensure everything about our wedding day was perfect and went so incredibly smoothly.
We are especially grateful to Nadine for all the help she provided us through the wedding planning process, patiently answering our never ending questions and being available seemingly 24/7 to reply to our many emails. We felt well prepared and knew exactly what to expect for every point in the day due to her professionalism, keen attention to detail and impressive organization skills. We were able to enjoy every moment of the day as everything was taken care of, there was truly nothing to worry about! Nadine was also very respectful and supportive of our vision for the day; while she was certainly happy to offer suggestions or opinions, we never felt pressure.
Ray was awesome to work with as well, and provided excellent service on the wedding day. It is clear Ray wants nothing but the best for guests at The Gates and will do anything he can to ensure everything is smooth sails. Ray even expertly helped me take my veil out during our cocktail hour when I couldnât find my mom or bridesmaids!
The food was amazing and we had so many guests comment on how much they enjoyed their meal. While often times banquet style catering can leave much to be desired with bland food and small portions, The Gates sets itself apart by providing generous portions of delicious, flavourful plates. It was actually hard to choose our menu with so many great options! We had also requested a small plate of appetizers from our cocktail hour be left on our sweetheart table as we were mingling and didnât have a chance to eat. We were very pleasantly surprised to find a large platter with beautiful garnishes waiting for us to enjoy when we sat down for dinner! Additionally, the late night snack was by far the best weâve ever had at a wedding or event!
The venue itself is absolutely stunning, and with very simple decor we were able to make the space feel that much more elegant and elevated. The well maintained grounds made for the perfect photo backdrop, which was nice to not have to think about finding another location and made for a smooth timeline.
Even months later we are still receiving compliments about our wedding from our friends and family, including several who have said our wedding was the best theyâve ever attended! The venue is obviously a huge part of that! The Gates went above and beyond our expectations and we highly recommend to any couple searching for the perfect wedding...
Read moreWe went for Easter Brunch and for us the brunch wasnât all that it used to be. Itâs been at least 5 years since we went for brunch, we previously attended both Motherâs Day and Fatherâs Day. I remember there being a lot more for selection and we had fonder memories of it being worth the drive/price. For hot breakfast there was only 3 options, potatoes, bacon and sausage. For lunch I believe there was only 4 options, plus the salad bar and 1 soup, 3 carvery items, option for freshly prepared crepe or omelette and there was mussels, peel and eat shrimp, cubes of cheese + previously roasted veggies served cold. Of course there was the dessert selection and the dark chocolate fountain. The carvery options were good, the soup and the omelette/crepe station were good. Which I would consider these options as extras on top of the main hot food. However majority of the brunch was a disappointment. As another previous review mentions the eggs benedict is not what it once was and I thought âmade to orderâ meant that it would be a freshly prepared poached egg done to your liking. However within 2 mins of ordering it âmade to orderâ it was served and it looked very similar to an egg McMuffin, the egg was cooked in a mold, the only difference in cook was the egg just wasnât fully cooked it was soft. All the selections for the âhot foodâ were lukewarm and had been sitting there for a long time it seemed. The bacon was not crispy. The waffles that were served as an option beside the omelette/crepe bar didnât seem that they were prepared in house, but rather store bought and were soggy and cold. The cakes I donât believe are prepared in house, but the cakes I will say were one of the best parts of brunch and the ones I did try were good. However, I tried to take a small carrot cake dainty piece and the moment I touched it to try to grab to eat it, I placed it back on my plate for disposal as it was super dry to the touch like cardboard. There was 3 fruits to go with the fountain, honeydew, cantaloupe and strawberries. The strawberries had their tops still on and uncut. So me and another person I did not know both ended up using separate skewers for each strawberry as it would make it easier to discard the top when eating from the skewer. The brunch to us just was not worth the price at all for the amount of selections given and the quality of these items, even the nearest brunch Assiniboia Downs offered essentially the same amount of food for $30 less than the price of the Gates. I donât feel we will return for brunch ever again, which is...
