Five of us went for a casual family dinner at this long-established restaurant. The food met expectations for pub fare in St. John's - deep fried, heavily battered and seasoned onion rings, shaved beef filled jumbo Yorkshire pudding, NL savoury-seasoned dressing stuffed in a chicken breast, and the always delicious hot turkey sandwich - everything generously shrouded in dark brown gravy. Cubed carrots and parsnips on the side and fries all around. The outlier among us chose cod au gratin with a fluffy white roll. Everyone enjoyed their supper. The gentlemen in the group gave high praise to the Yorkshire pudding and shaved beef, heroically resisting the urge to lick their plates clean. Bravo boys! Service was friendly, although not overly quick. It's a pub after all. Give it a try. There's lots to choose from on the usual menu. During the Canada Games the menu is truncated, but still many choices.

Since moving to St. John's over a year ago, the Covid-19 restrictions have hindered our searching out local cuisine treasures. Today we discovered the Guv'Nor pub, an English pub setting, well kept up and excellent decorations made for an excellent location to experience a great breakfast. We tried their skillet and an order of bologna with eggs, this has become one of the top 4 places on our list of places to eat in St.John's. A new employee, Taylor provided us with excellent, friendly service which sealed the deal for us. Will be back to check their evening menu and enjoy a pint or 2. 2023 update - post covid, we've been back numerous times and continue to enjoy our meals. Today was supper with Yorkshire pudding, bangers and mash served by Jeremy along with stout from a local Brewery. Blueberry cake in a rum sauce for desert was fantastic.

Our room (the Sweeney Suite) was absolutely amazing! It feels like an apartment, with both an amazing tub and bed. We stopped at the pub and the service was great, even though it was busy. The food (especially the fish and chips) was absolutely delicious. Some of the best I've had. Great job! p.s. dressing goes on the gravy on the chips.

I was traveling with a dog on my trip, so my choice of hotels was limited and I was not willing to spend $150+ a night for a room. Granted this hotel was not cheap either. The photos posted online looked nice and it seemed like an interesting place to stay at. I supposed because I have a pet and I had to stay in the motel section of the property may have contributed to my dislike of the place.||||My first impressions of driving into the motel section were that I was staying a seedy motel. I got the impression of a pay by hour motel. It was not of course, but that is the feeling I got when I first arrived. and during my 4 day stay, that feeling never left me.||||The room was also not the cleanest. There was a bloodstain on the white comforter. There was a hat and some candy behind the bureau that held the TV. The room had 2 beds and each bed was about 6 inches from the wall. The floor in this 6-inch space on both sides was filthy with dust. It was as if the vacuum had not been done in those spaces for months. I complained about the blood and the comforter was changed. However, I only noticed it the morning after.||||I was also stuck in the room on the corner. Getting my car in the parking spot closest to the room was a nightmare particularly because the spot next to mine was taken up with a huge pickup truck. I do not like driving forward into a tight or hard to get to spot because it makes it all that much harder to get out. It was just awkward.||||The beds, however, were very comfortable, and the room was very quiet. With all the bustle outside, the rooms seemed soundproof. There must be a roof drain passing through our bathroom because when it rained, it sounded like a waterfall in the bathroom with the water draining from the roof going through the pipes in the walls.||||All in all, the pictures on the website and elsewhere online looked a lot better than the property actually was. Perhaps the hotel section was better, I do not know, so I cannot...

I did not stay in the hotel but ate in the restaurant many times years ago. I was in love with the lasagna and would not think of eating it anywhere else. I went there last night after living away for 7 years. It was tasty but not like I remembered, sadly. The lasagna nolonger comes out in an individualized oval cast iron skillet like it did. Now it's on a large white plate. The portion is now served on a square plate. It looks smaller, and first thought is this was maybe bulk produced or bought. It didn't have a whole lot of cheese like it used to. I walked in expecting to do a 5 star for the food but, instead, give it only a 3 star, which breaks my heart. Now, the flip side is nothing has changed inside the place, which is perfect. l. I hope they never try to change or modernize it. It adds to its old English charm. The staff were great. (Especially) The one server, Jeremy, who was funny, added much personality 🤣 and laughs. He was also very handsome, and he could be much more interactive with its restaurant patrons, not just to those at the bar, but one can't help overlook it. It was very much the feeling of being in an old English pub almost slash dinner theater. Jeremy livened up the place and gave it Jazz. So overall, I would give it a 4 stars. I wanted to do 5 stars after a $75+ meal for two, but I'll have to be ok with giving only 4 stars to one of these cities' iconic restaurants that I always loved. If Jeremy was not there, I would have been forced to give 3 stars. I'm happy and disappointed. I may return for a pint but food.... hmmmm I'm not sure, to be honest. Maybe it's a new chef, new recipe, and no serving methods, but it has me wondering if I want to spend money again on food there, and I just don't know. I take my reviews very seriously and try my very best to be fair and honest...
