Our first time at Basho was quite good! The food there is our new favorite in St. John's. We built up an appetite before we arrived specifically because we were very hyped to try a variety of things. We had the tuna tartar, the spicy scallop roll, the Nobu scallop and asparagus dishes to start. Then, we had rack of lamb and the dry aged sirloin as mains. Each item was fantastic in their own way. Of the appetizers, I'll give a specific shout out to the Nobu scallop and asparagus dish - the sauce was incredible and the scallops perfectly cooked. For our mains, the steak was a perfect medium rare and the prosciutto sauce that it was topped with was an amazing addition. Truffle fries - what else is there to say about that? Lamb was also great, I was surprised that my favorite part of the lamb dish ended up bring the bed of ratatouille - it had such a unique flavor to it! In all, the food was fantastic. The only reason this rating is not a 5 star is because service was a bit slow. Admittedly, it was a very busy Victoria day weekend so I understand. We will be back for sure! I'll order only sushi next time because the one roll we ordered this time was so fantastic.

My partner and I have visited this restaurant at least once a month for the past year and the only thing that keeps us coming back is the food. The sirloin dinner is exceptional and their mojitos are fresh and light. However, our views of the restaurant become tainted with each interaction due to the lack of professionalism. They are less than accommodating when trying to make a reservation- not once have we been able to make a reservation, yet we show up to an empty restaurant after deciding to walk in. Staff check on their patrons much less than expected and then proceed to act snob when they hand you the bill. Tonight, as we finished our meal and paid our bill, we thanked our waitress for their service and were merely shrugged off with the words “alright.” On the way out the door, we again thanked another waitress for their service and again were left unacknowledged. We beg the manger of this establishment to reconsider their staffing choices. Looking at these reviews, it is disappointing that time and time again entitled staff overbear the high quality food that is provided.

Another glorious Basho experience last evening. This Japanese fusion mecca never fails to impress. Gloriously and meticulously crafted, prepared and presented, with exceptional balance, depth and breadth of flavour. Each dish, every dish, each time every time. The scallops three ways (see photo) should be on your bucket list. Enjoy them left to right to optimize the flavour and texture journey. My main course was a sweet and savoury, crispy skinned, sublimely cooked, Muscovy duck beast, accompanied by perfectly matching starch components and crispy delicious asparagus, together with a phemonal red wine soy reduction. Magnificent. My friends enjoyed, among other things, what they described as the most wonderful cod dish they have experienced in this city. No small feat indeed. Oh, and while I passed on it this time around, the Nobu inspired sashimi is truly extraordonary. All this, in a relaxed, laid back atmosphere, with decently attentive service, no pretentiousness, and lower prices than the experience warrants. Consistently awesome! Enjoy.

Came to this establishment looking forward to a good time. Will, that was an understatement. When we arrived, we placed our orders for our drinks and appetizers. Which we had to wait an hour for, when we finally got our drinks and appetizers. The appetizers were cut down in size by 3/4 from what you would normally get. So we questioned the size, with that the server ( who's name is Steven ) gave us a lecture on inflation. Then we placed our orders for our main course, 4 orders that were placed were for 4 beef tenderloins cooked medium with the sauce on the side. Came back raw. My wife and I orders 2 striploins cooked medium rare, I asked for no salad. And extra fries. And my wife, she ordered hers with less salad. And a few extra fries. With my wife's order, she was told that they couldn't do less salad and a few extra fries. She was told by the server that we can't do that because it's to busy, and that your going to get whatever we give you. Now at this point after placing our orders of a table of 6. A table of 16, and 4 tables of 2 which came in and placed their orders after ours were served, and done. So another hour later our server starts to bring our our food, and it was wrong. So before placing it on the table, he takes it away. Leaving us having to wait even longer. Another half hour later our food is brought out, and it too was all wrong. 4 orders of beef tenderloin that were ordered came out as Striploins that were raw. My wife's came out as a well done striploin, with 3 times the amount of salad. And mine came out as a raw beef tenderloin with no sauce. And half the amount of fries. When we questioned our server ( Steven ) he flew off his head cursing and swear on all of us, loud enough for the entire restaurant to hear. And accusing all of us of being there all the time complaining about the food. And just looking for free meals. As this point we all got up and left. Now my family an I have been there multiple times over the years, and we have never complained. But this time, we had 2 others with us that this was their first time there. Needless to say that this has left a very sour taste of a 5 star restaurant in all of our mouths. I DON'T RECOMMEND THIS RESTAURANT TO ANYONE. Unless our wish to be yelled, cursed and sworn on. And also, when it was brought to the attention of the manager, she just stood there with a smug look and smile and her face. And wished a Happy New Year. Worst...

I wish I could give more stars for the food we did have but the service my girlfriend and I got was poor, unwelcoming and overall had a server projecting her bad night on us.

If you are looking to go to Basho, may be worth rethinking and picking one of the other fantastic restaurants in downtown St. John's that values their guests.

Trying to get get a reservation to begin with was difficult and should've been my first sign to try somewhere else but went along with it and 6+ calls and leaving a message that wasn't answered, we got a reservation for 8pm.

Walking into the restaurant it started off with a pretty short conversation with a woman who ended up being our server that evening. I don't know if she was having a bad night but we got the brunt of it as she was anything but welcoming and her attitude made it clear she was not happy to see us.

We got drinks which were fine, ordered the scallops, striploin and the Toby Plate. We were then told they were completely out of Sushi/sashimi to then have the table next to us, who were sat and ordered after us have what I can only assume was the Toby plate (a large chef's plate of sushi/sashimi/nigiri) show up at their table 45 minutes later. Interesting. Halfway through the steak we decided to try and order another main course as we were both still hungry, to which we were told the stoves are off and the kitchen is closed. The server then follows that up with "you two are having some bad luck tonight".... not great. She offered us a dessert on the house which was nice but it took us getting clearly frustrated with the evening for her to remotely care and start to change her attitude.

Judging by the lack of interaction with any of the previous reviews and no contact email, I'd imagine this may fall on deaf ears. Both my girlfriend and I are in the service industry and understand off nights, but the lack of care and concern as though we were doing a disservice for simply coming in to dine was extremely frustrating and...

I was really looking forward to trying out Basho last night. When we entered first the younger hostess lady was very friendly and told us she would seat us upstairs. As we were walking up the older hostess or waitress or manager (whoever she was) rudely stopped our hostess, saying "no no. I just sat 6 up there youre gonna seat them down here" right in front of us while we awkwardly stood in the stairwell. Then we got turned around to a dingey room with old carpeting. The second ruder lady 'helped' us and dropped off waters without saying a word. The menus were dirty and there was a terrible smell in the room. When she came back and asked, again rudely, if we "wanted anything other than water" and we said we would need a minute because we barely even opened the menus at this point. She never introduce herself to us, asked anything, it just seemed like were we unwelcomed and not wanted there from the moment she laid eyes on us. The smell of the fish tank was so bad and so overwhelming we couldn't focus on the reading the menus. It was my birthday dinner and we wanted to sit around and eat and drink for a couple hours at least, but I could not stand the thought of trying to eat for any amount of time with the fish tank smell, especially at a place that sells sushi. We debated asking to be seated upstairs instead as I really did want to try the food here, but with how rude the waitress was to us we figured it was a bad start already and asking to go upstairs would make it worse so we chose to leave and eat elsewhere. When we left we mentioned why we were leaving and the lady just said "yeah ok" without even an apology, nothing. I expected a fine dining experience here, especially with the prices, however it was probably the worst customer service experience we have had in a restaurant in St. John's to the point I didnt even care to try the...
