papillon cocktail bar — Restaurant in St. John's

Really cute little spot! Super sweet vibe, but given the size of this bar, the music is WAY TOO LOUD. WAY TOO LOUD! I've been there a few times during their week and once on a Saturday night and it was a Saturday night party. The music was sooooo loud - I mean louder than any concert venue!! The base was shaking the windows when we were outside smoking. I also could feel it deep in my stomach and my ears were hurting after a few minutes. I could literally feel the floor vibrating under my feet. It just wasn't enjoyable after about 40 minutes. For a space that size, it's really not necessary. It's not a giant nightclub. We didn't stay and not sure I'll go back on Saturdays or ever if the music continues to be that loud. It's just not necessary. It's not a nightclub, it's a cool vibing bar. When we left we could hear the door shaking on the building next door. That's how loud the base was for a small place so beware. DON'T GO on Saturday nights! You'll seriously go deaf. I feel sorry for the bartenders. I mean it's one thing with DJ's they got headphones on but seriously, music that loud that is vibrating windows and doors, and the floor shaking, for a "cocktail" bar? Why call yourself a cocktail bar if you're wanting to be a nightclub. I actually got nautious after the 40 minutes just due to the equilibrium being lost in my ear drums. IT WAS WAY TOO LOUD AND as someone who has worked in bars, I always made sure to tell the Dj's to keep it at least down a notch. THE ENTIRE BUILDING WAS VIBRATING. Vibing hotspot—oh so fun for real. We are from Toronto and just arrived in town for George Street Festival. We were looking for somewhere with fresh food, great drinks and amazing vibes.

We checked out a few of the bigger commercial places and weren’t feeling the vibe. Then we stumbled across this place and Meghan served us. She was fast, friendly and provided great service. Also Ricky was super friendly as were all the staff.

Now to the food, we had the seafood platter and obviously it was all fresh. On top of that the price was very reasonable and the scallops were like none I have ever had—so yummy. So was the oyster mushroom and cocktails.

Took 45 minutes to get cocktails after ordering them, only two available food items on the menu (nuts, or bread dip which was unremarkable). For 15-16$ pretty disappointing to receive a drink that was half full (with a napkin wrapped around the glass to create the illusion that the foam didn't take up 1/2 of the glass). No one in our group thought their cocktail was anything above mediocre. Food items arrived staggered over a 30 minute span meaning some went without food (even though they ordered the same food item as someone else) while others finished theirs before we got the drinks. Service also just terrible, forgot a food item, brought an extra drink, this after we repeated our order! Atmosphere also...
