As avid foodies, my husband and I were thrilled to visit Rabble, a newly opened restaurant in St. John's, Newfoundland, on the recommendation of our good friend who is also a Michelin Restaurant chef. Our trip back to St. John’s 1 day earlier was specifically planned for this dining experience, and it exceeded our expectations in every way.
Rabble was already a bustling hotspot, and we were fortunate to secure two seats at the bar. The atmosphere is vibrant and welcoming, with a modern yet cozy interior that makes you feel right at home. It's worth noting that reservations are highly recommended to avoid disappointment, as this place fills up fast!
From the moment we arrived, the service was outstanding. Our server, Vivian, was knowledgeable, professional, and incredibly friendly. Her expertise extended beyond just the food; she also crafted some of the tastiest cocktails we've ever had. We highly recommend trying the Orange Lemon Blossom cocktail and the Daiquiri – both were delightful and perfectly balanced.
The food at Rabble was a true highlight. Each dish arrived hot and perfectly cooked, showcasing the kitchen's skill and attention to detail. The Parisienne mushroom gnocchi was a standout, with a perfect texture and beautifully balanced flavours. It's easy to overcook gnocchi, but this was spot on – not overdone at all.
The shrimp tartine, served on sourdough, was equally impressive. The shrimp was succulent, and the sourdough provided the perfect base, making for a delicious and satisfying appetizer.
Desserts at Rabble are an experience unto themselves. Although I wanted to try everything on the menu, Chef Todd’s wife recommended the lemon cake and apple galette. Her suggestions were spot on. The lemon cake was warm and fresh, with a unique twist from the basil that added a delightful complexity to the flavour profile. The apple galette was equally divine, with super flaky pastry that melted in your mouth. Sharing these desserts with my husband was a challenge – they were that good!
Rabble offers a great atmosphere, excellent food, and outstanding service. This memorable evening has firmly placed Rabble on our list of must-visit spots in Newfoundland. We will undoubtedly recommend this restaurant to our family and friends visiting the area. Thank you, Chef Todd, for an unforgettable...
Read moreI was so excited to try this restaurant and was not disappointed at all. I read some of the other reviews were people had marked them really low, and I think it’s because they didn’t read anything about the restaurant before they arrived. It a 100+ heritage building, it’s not accessible. (the kitchen is upstairs.. imagine all the running folks have to do up and down those stairs) it also states that they do not accommodate strollers as it is a small space. I loved the small, buzzy atmosphere, and the quaint and small tables. I actually got to talk to my neighbours beside me which was nice. It is loud, so if you are someone that struggles with background noise I would recommend not attending on a busy night/ weekend evening. I had my ear plugged from flying and was having a hard time hearing the sever, she was so kind to accommodate me by making sure I could hear what she was saying! Ok- that being said. The food was unreal, I had the Brussels sprouts, Parisian Gnocchi, and the Chocolate dessert. I had the Prosecco Paloma and a glass of red wine. The drinks prices were amazing, so much better than many places. And the presseco paloma was amazing! Fresh juice, really topped off this drink. If they have kimchi fried Brussels sprouts with parm on their featured menu - you need to try it. The Parisian gnocchi - so many flavours in a small dish. I was blown away. And I’m not a dessert girl, but the food was so incredible to this point, I had to try it. The chocolate dessert, I can’t recall what it was called, was perfect. Not too sweet and just enough decadence that it wasn’t too much. The meal was amazing! And the service was phenomenal. I think there was some comments about the plates being small. Well yes, when you source local high quality ingredients and you make items from scratch the quantities are never going to be Fish exchange size or gahan house style platters. So keep that in mind. If you want to eat and savour h high quality food go to Rabble. If you want to eat a large plate of food, there are several restaurants that will do this for you :) It was nice to see Todd there at the start of supper service, and you get a real vibe that everyone enjoys working there, and people become regulars and everyone kind of knows your name. Was a great night-...
Read moreI’ve been following the reno via Instagram for several months so when in town wanted to try when I had the chance. Went “opening night” and a few days after. First of all, great atmosphere, modern but still cozy and not sterile. I think the restaurant decor is a great embodiment of where St. John’s is today. Little nautical flourishes on the art without being kitschy. Service from Evan, excellent, way above what was expected and seen at a typical restaurant on the island. Now let’s talk about the food, started bread and butter, oysters, and a mezze plate. The mezze plate was definitely the stand out here. Matched with the extensive drink menu could see returning for this alone with a drink at the bar. The main dishes on the first night steak frites. Good flavor, could have been a touch hotter but the fries were delicious. The second night the mains were exceptional, the piri piri chicken was spotted at other tables the first night and when I ordered it on the second night it did not disappoint. This was the best chicken dish I’ve had a restaurant and the halibut was truly next level. Both I would return for. I always ask myself when I eat at a new place is would I return. For Rabble, the answer is yes. Good luck with the new place and see...
