Went in on a Wednesday afternoon to purchase some of Water Street's Rocket Bakery's famous fish cakes as we were visiting St. John's for a few days. We happily ordered fish cakes and we're told they sold out a few hours ago. Very disappointed. However, the next morning I called at 0810 (they open at 0830) and a gentleman answered the phone to inform me they were still unloading their delivery for the day. He recommended I call in about an hour.... I called at 0900. Same gentleman confirmed they had them. I called for a cab from the Sheraton and was at Rocket Bakery by 0920. They had a breakfast crowd present. The friendly lady behind counter was so nice to help us with our request and recommend how to travel with them. I ordered a dozen to take on our flight home for dinner that evening. We were given a small tub of tarter sauce (enough for the dozen) and the fish cakes were packaged in 2 domed plastic containers. We had them for dinner that evening. Despite not being fried they were so moist and delicious after reheating in the oven. We enjoyed most of them that evening. Would you believe we had the 2 remaining for breakfast the next day. 😮 Surprisingly, they were a great breakfast as well! Highly recommend (as we were) that you try them if you are in St. John's. Get them before noon and/or call first to confirm they have them.

I am only giving this a star, as the pecan square was okay I received this entire order in a 4x6? inch bag, with everything slapped on top of one another. I havent had Rocket in years, and its gone downhill terribly, sadly. The brownie didn't even taste of chocolate. It tasted like leftover refrigerator items. Like it had been in a cooler with items for weeks. And I'm not sure if the white bottom was mold, but I'm surely not eating it to find out. The Casablanca bar looked pretty, but the peanuts tasted stale and off. Inedible. As for the Partridgeberry Crumble - it was all crumble, and hardly any filling. Very dissatisfied. A Vachon flakie would be ten times more satisfying than this stuff. 0.5/10. Highly shocking this is what the place has been reduced to. Their desserts used to be really nice. RIP Rocket.

A must-stop for a casual breakfast or lunch when in St. John's. Don't pass on trying the delicious fish cakes. While I prefer mustard pickles with mine, the tartar sauce was tasty. I also tried the schnecke - croissant pastry with coconut, honey, and lemon curd. Quite sweet and sticky, but great with a cup of coffee. There are so many delicious-looking baked goods, salads, and more at Rocket Bakery - Water Street. The cafe is eclectic Newfoundland, fun and friendly. Lots of seating on a weekday morning. Friendly staff, too. There's an all-day menu, a vegan lunch menu, and a gluten-free menu to help you choose. I go every time I'm in town. P.S. If you're watching the latest season of Reacher on Amazon Prime, you will recognize the filming location on Water Street. 😃

Rocket refused to give our wedding deposit back even though it would have been impossible for them to provide the services agreed upon at the time of booking.

When we were forced to rebook our wedding plans at the Rocket Room due to Covid in 2020, we were initially told that our deposit would be held in trust until such time as the event could be rescheduled. When venues were again allowed to operate some months later, we were still unable to return to Canada from Australia due to travel restrictions in both countries.

Then, near the end of 2020 we were informed by the Rocket ownership that they were moving from their old Water Street location and would, as a result, be losing the function room, and therefore unable to hold weddings in 2021. We were then told, after several emails back and forth with proprietor Dave Hopley, that we would receive no compensation of any kind from Rocket, despite the fact that the facilities we had paid for no longer existed.

We got nothing at all for our money because of the supposed financial hardships that Covid had foisted upon Rocket Bakery; a company which, 18 months later, is now operating 3 locations.

Covid has been devastating for many and outside anyone's control but I am absolutely shocked that they can get away with keeping our money, when they are still operating a successful business. It is truly shameful behaviour from a company that has the gall to associate itself with the traditional Newfoundland values of kindness and community. What is worse, I strongly suspect that we are not alone in...

I'm not in the habit of writing reviews but feel compelled to comment on what I see as the short comings of the Rocket. 3 yrs ago I discovered the Rocket while working in downtown St John's and have gone there religiously on every trip to St John's, great coffee, love the food, casual atmosphere and service is good. On this trip I took my wife to the Rocket for a late breakfast thinking it would be a good experience. We placed our order were asked to be seated and our food would be delivered. There were no seats available so I informed the cashier, we were then seated at a table the size of a large dinner plate in the corner of what looks like a stockroom there goes the pleasant atmosphere. Our food arrived my wife had a speciality toast with avacado and it was quite nice, I had the breakfast hash it was poor quality, small quantity and over priced. The dish was mostly potato with a dry over cooked egg on top, the peppers and other veggies listed on the menu were spray on at best, this is not the Rocket I remember. The staff does not seem to be engaged in their jobs or their customers this is not what we experienced at any other business on our trip. The Rocket now seems more like a hang-out with "nobody minding the store" Unfortunately I think the Rocket has...
