This location is a pretty good spot for coffee. The drinks and food are quite good. However the location has gone way downhill. I get it its hard to compete against the larger brands. But not putting in any effort is certainly not going to get the brand anywhere.
Recently the Espresso machine has been broken for at least a month. The wifi is up and down and nobody seems to be able to correct the issues. The wifi is very slow, get 2-4 customers online and you might as well use your own mobile hot spot. There is a lovely fireplace in the middle of the lobby that is never on, there are bricks/blocks falling out of the fireplace. The glass is removed or broken from either side. The leather chairs that were located around the fireplace have mostly all broken and have not all been replaced (even before the pandemic).
And because there is usually just one staff member on lately they can't handle drive-thru and the lobby at the same time, or if a technical issue arises. Last week there as a power outage and the POS was down. The barrista could only offer free coffee or tea. They could not sell drinks or food.
Outside of the store the Drivethrough menu board is damaged with no menu displeyed making the location look like it is not open.
I really believe that Second Cup has a comparable drink line-up to others and could gain more customers if there were more stores in St. John's area.

Read moreMy husband and I try to go local as often as possible when it comes to our coffee and this used to be our go-to place due to its location. I used to study here during the winter 2013 and spring 2014 semesters and I was going through drive-thru almost daily. However, we have been going less and less due to the fact that the customer service at this location is almost unbearably rude. When I have asked questions about different drinks (due to dietary restrictions from breastfeeding), I am often met with a manner of annoyance. In drive-thru, the tone of greeting is often one of irritation even before I have spoken. Your staff's demeanor does not lead one off to having a great day or end the day well. It has gotten to the point where my husband and I have taken our business to other coffee places in the area just to avoid the rudeness of Second Cup. The best thing you have going for you is your live music and one of your male staff members (with long curly brown hair and glasses) who is exceptionally friendly. I am very sorry to leave a review such as this as my husband and I have never been Starbucks fans, especially in other countries, AND, I hardly write reviews, but the service at this Second Cup has been so awful, it's...
Read moreA small hidden gem in this city tucked away in a quiet parking lot. Fantastic coffee, tea, and food. Free WiFi available. Quiet location. I particularly like that they don't really play music here over stereo systems & if they do they don't blast it, which is great for those who have sensory isssues.
May look closed from the outside but don't let the cooling window curtains fool you. It has a comfortable and homey atmosphere, comfortable seating, and amazing staff. Sometimes staff may be bored but I get that having worked retail where customers are not always coming at all times.
Drive through is still broken sadly (come on corporate it's been almost a year now!). They have had a rough time with things breaking & not getting prompt repair. Maybe due to no local franchises owner of the establishment (re lockout a few years ago, I think owned by corporate again). I don't hold this against the staff though, as I'm sure they are just as frustrated (cough, espresso machine breakdown & drive through broken). I've seen way worse cafes & this isn't going to be your hippy modern posh cafe, but this is my homey escape from the busy world for me & that is why I keep coming back.
Recommend trying the chocolate dipped oatcakes and...
