Travelling the entire island this summer and this was the best food, atmosphere and service experience easily. We had Lindsay as our server. She brought out our drinks and cod tongues with scrunchions right away. She thoughtfully described the preparation and history of this dishe’s significance. She also told us this was the place to get them as they are done well here. Tried to get a picture of the cod tongues but they were gone in a snap 🫰🏻 Cocktail for the day was a Spiced Rum with pineapple and a house made ginger brew. It was delicious. Didn’t last long either. My husband and I like to order things we can share so we had the Admirals Feast and the Lobster Mac and Cheese. They packed the lobster in that Mac and cheese generously and let me say, they had me at the Mac and Cheese! The cavatappi was done perfect and ready to hold only all the boursin, parmesan, provolone, and padano cheese . Every bite was heaven! The Admiral’s platter had scallops, halibut, salmon, cod, fish cake and shrimp. Each were prepared uniquely and cooked perfectly with a very thoughtful overall presentation. Hard to pick a favourite from this selection but I will say I had fresh, in-season halibut all over the island and this one was by far the best. It was not cooked. Loving care was bestowed upon it. It was respected. I had the French country salad and my husband had the Caesar. I’m not sure about his Caesar but the French Country was as beautiful as France itself. Delicious. It was our last meal here on Newfoundland and it was special for a number of reasons… but all our stories about what brought us to this place in our journey were answered with the same warmth and love by this restaurant, our amazing server Lindsay and we think SJFX is the best. Worth every penny and we both thank you all in providing this most delicious meal 🙏🏻

Visited on a Tuesday evening with a reservation for 7pm. We had requested 7:15pm but it was not available. When we arrived just before 7 there were 3 or 4 other parties waiting to be seated and we were advised that they slightly behind on Reservation. We waited 30 minutes during which time all other parties and several new arrivals were seated. At this point we were asked for the name on reservation they said oh, "your still here". The whole time the 4 of us had been standing within 3 feet of the desk. A few minutes later we were taken to our table which thank fully was an excellent location on the 2 level overlooking the Harbour. This was not our 1st visit to SJFE and as in the past the food was very good. Our appetizers were Scallops, Salt Fish Cake Fritters, Mussels and Bruschetta and all were delicious. For mains we had Stuff Chicken Breast, fish Tacos & the Salmon and rice special all of which were very good. In the case of the Chicken and the salmon both had a sauce that was a bit spicier then expected and while not "hot" might not be a great choice for anyone who does not like spicy food at all. For desert we has the daily special "wild berry crumble" basically a wild berry sauce with a thin cake top covered in whipped cream. The Desert was ok. The sauce seemed to me mostly Strawberries and left the impression they had used frozen not fresh. Personally I think it would have been much better served warm. The service at the table was great, the view was amazing and the food was good so all in all a great night out with family. For 4 adults including 3 drinks the meal came to $317.00 before tip. One of benefits of this restaurant is the fact that there is parking within the building.

Had read highly rated reviews for this restaurant so of course we had to have dinner here on our final night in St. John’s. Unfortunately we did not make a reservation so had a ~30 mins. wait when we arrived shortly before 6 PM; definitely secure a reservation in advance. Secured a table near the entrance/bar so lacked the scenery but we could not complain. Bustling ambiance with sight and sound, we still loved it. We ordered the SJFX chowder, lobster and shrimp pappardelle, crab meal and a kid’s meal (SJFX burger, Caesar’s salad, vanilla ice cream with chocolate sauce and milk). Everything was absolutely divine! The seafood portions are generous - chowder was so rich with crab and seafood pappardelle was so flavourful with huge seafood chunks. The crab was a bit messy and challenging to eat but that’s a given. We were also quite impressed with the kids’ meal; you really got more than the bang for your buck for $12, burger was huge and flavourful, Mommy and Daddy devoured the salad on his behalf and what a portion, he enjoyed the dessert to top it all off. Service was friendly and prompt, considering how busy it was. We had a grand time and would highly recommend it!

Modern and spacious space, with a hip vibe and buzzing with life, the interiors were inviting and looked like a restaurant which could easily be in downtown Toronto. However, the orders came in very slowly, almost an hour’s wait especially for the cioppino and the tacos. We tried to cancel the last 2 orders as it was getting very late but the food suddenly was served after 5 minutes from us trying to cancel. The food was so so as well, nothing to write home about, maybe it was the hype but we expected it to be better given the excellent reviews. The chowder of Blue on Water was way better. This one tasted a bit ordinary, not bad but not great. The tacos were ok, nothing special but the seafood cioppino was the most mediocre we’ve tried. It lacked depth and flavour, almost like there was too much water and it diluted the flavour. When the server returned, it was to ask us how we wanted to pay for the bill. Maybe they were too busy at the time but it was a disappointing experience overall.

I’ve eaten here twice now and both times everything has been amazing. Servers and knowledgeable and the chief is able to make adjustments on the daily specials to accommodate my gluten sensitivity. I always end up ordering a combination of items off the daily specials and haven’t yet eaten anything off their standard menu because the specials sound so amazing. This time we got mussels with fresh tomatoes, celery and garlic. Cod with fennel bacon sauce and rice. Two tacos, one with their bang bang shrimp the other with halibut with fries, and a type of whitefish I had never heard of before so I can’t remember the name but had a texture and butteriness similar to lobster, that came with a coconut curry sauce which was amazing!! They also bring warm fresh bread with molasses butter which my dinner partners said was amazing. I highly suggest this restaurant to anyone in St. John’s!

Was expecting high prices and smaller portions, but was still disappointed. The spinach and crab dip, $16, was average but only came with tortilla chips. Would be better value if it also came with pita bread, which is common at other restaurants. The seafood feast, $43, was shared between me and my partner. She was disappointed by the presentation, I was disappointed by the portion, although I should have known. The server asked if we wanted to know what was what on the platter, and then proceeded to guess his way around the plate and in the end admitted he didn't know what fish was which. The food itself ranged from delicious to meh. I really liked the cod fritter and lobster. Next time we are downtown St. John's, we will be trying another seafood restaurant.
