TLDR: Greatest dining experience I may have ever had, if you go here do yourself a favor and get the “Let the Kitchen Cook for You”
To say that this was one of the most truly enjoyable dining experiences would be an understatement. Every aspect of this culinary experience managed to impress me more than the last, from the service, to the atmosphere, to of course, the beyond incredible food. I had the absolute privilege of enjoying the “Let the Kitchen Cook for You” meal service, and it did exceeded expectations in every way. Upon sitting down I instantly noticed that “Is this It?” By the Strokes was playing, and as a huhe fan of the album, the night was off to a great start, and the vibes were immaculate as they were playing it all the way through. Starting with an incredible fresh and delicious bread that had some of the better butter I have ever had, I knew I had made the right selection. The first appetizer plate then solidified that choice with some of the most creative, fresh, and delicious seafood appetizers I could have imagined. Perfectly portioned to give me a taste of three marvelous fine dining plates, I was able to try a variety of different items (I honestly could not tell you exactly what they were, and would hate to misrepresent and do a disservice to the chef by messing up). After completing the first round, I then was greeted with three more appetizer plates that only continued to blow me away. Fresh and land based with salad and poultry, it was an entirely different experience but nonetheless amazing. At this point, I was informed that the FIRST course had only now completed. I was already in awe. The next course was the seafood entree, which was some of the smoothest and best cooked fish I have had. The sides and puree it was accompanied by only elevated the incredible flavor and texture. Beyond impressed and after leaving not a crumb (through the whole meal so far), I then received the meat entree. Somehow the courses just managed to continuously impress me and give me a new appreciation for attention to detail and craftsmanship. Finally, after enjoying the third course, the absolute cherry on top was the delicious and creative dessert, that had some of the most vivid grape flavors with two different jams/purees in a medium I had never seen. All these courses coupled with exceptional bartending and service, while having great music playing solidified what was the best culinary experience of my life. Absolutely full, I discovered a pool table in the lobby right outside the restaurant, and enjoyed the rest of my night playing. I cannot thank the chef and restaurant staff enough for this opportunity and hope that I one day can return so I can relive this marvelous experience with whatever creative new dishes Terre decides to offer. Even weeks later this night still lives rent free in my head and I have absolutely 0 issues with that. Do yourself a favor...
Read moreStarved myself all day for this. Friend said it was best resto in st john’s. I even dressed up (which i rarely do). Picked here for my wife’s bday dinner.
When we got there they started walking us to our table then didn’t know where to put us so we stood in middle of dining room for 5 mins dodging servers and other patrons.
Our server took our drink orders, and came back 10 mins later and said he forgot what our drink orders was. No big deal, but not a good start. We didn’t receive our first drink for 25 minutes.
The tables are close together so every couple mins when servers went to the table next to us we’d get a random servers butt at face/drink level.
We ordered the chef-cooks-for-you option, hoping to get a taste of everything. Unfortunately everything came out very slowly and was not very impressive. Our first “course” came out at about the 45 min mark.
Bad flavour combinations and seemed like they gave us the less desirable options. There was chicken that smelt good, and some beef, but our grand finale was a soggy sausage for 2 to share.
The plating was quite messy overall. They gave us raw uncut vegetables with a nasty fish dip just splattered all over the plate. This is meant for a child’s lunch, not fine dining. Hardly gastronomy IMO.
Usually you’ll like a couple things, a couple other not so much. Unfortunately this was not the case. One bite appetizers usually have you desiring more, but alas i did not desire more.
I expressed my disappointent at the 1/3 mark of service but was assured better things were coming. One server claimed i wasn’t adventurous because i didn’t enjoy the food. I just wanted to leave and go eat somewhere else, but i was already locked in.
I have eaten durian, whale, fish eyeballs, etc. i am not a picky eater in the slightest. The combinations didn’t work and they all had the flavour of canned smoked mussels. When you’re looking at a 400$ meal you’d expect more than 2 drinks and to have enjoyed at least some of the food.
They got paid, and my wallets lighter. So if they don’t like my opinions and think i’m uneducated in food service, i’m not concerned. Just another hotel restaurant tourist trap on water street as far as...
Read moreAs the sun dipped below the buildings of old St. John’s, it casts a sigh of relief across the downtown area as I walk hand and hand with my beautiful wife down Water Street. This past week has tormented the province with a heat wave but this evening just boasts the perfect temperature and what a beautiful evening it was. We were greeted at the restaurant with a Negroni and a Whiskey Smash while we feasted our minds on the menu at hand. Our friends soon joined us and we had a deep debate over the menu as if we were passing a parliamentary bill. The server soon assisted our decisions and the previous mentioned bill was soon motioned and passed. Our debating discussions transitioned to life and leisure while we waited for our food to arrive. We never reached the leisure part before our food arrived, Potato Bread and Ham Hock Terrine, the perfect start to the perfect meal. The atmosphere of the restaurant felt right, the music not loud but audible, the light not bright but no flashlights needed. The candles on the tables cast the perfect twinkle into my true love’s eyes. The servers were friendly and food had a nice rhythm of arrival. The table always had food but it never piled high. The Berkshire Sausage was the next to come and was as enjoyable as it is to say. Even an immature palette like my own enjoyed the succulinity of this sausage. It was enjoyed with a QV Dayboil, a beer I’ve become quite fond of over the years. You could say I’ve even become loyal to the boil and this is the drink I stuck with for the remainder of the evening. The final course of the evening was the Beer Can Chicken. It was cooked on top of a Blue Star can, a beer drank by many in sheds and stages staggered across the island. For someone who has endured years of my wife’s dried out chicken meals, this was something spectacular to say the least. This was a taste and texture of chicken I’ve never known possible. To the chef I thank you dearly. Overall it was a great evening enjoyed with friends, food and foolishness. It’ll be a night we’ll look back on fondly for a long time. We hope to make many more memories here for years and...
