Went in on a Thursday morning to grab a drink and baked good to go. Found out they only do baked goods on the weekend. Grabbed a vanilla latte to go - which was tasty and made quickly. There was only 1 person working (that I saw) and 1 other customer at the time. The staff member was efficient, though not overly welcoming or friendly. The vibes of the space are great - on a different day, it would be a great place to come and work or read a book. We did try coming on Wednesday, as Google said they were open, and so did the sign on the store. It was Regatta day, so I understand why they would be closed. However, putting up a sign or updating Google with this information would have been helpful, as travelers rely on this info (and they are across the street from a hotel).

There are not a ton of cafes in St. John's, at least around downtown. So we decided on Toslow for some coffee and food after exploring for a while. This place is in the north end of downtown on Duckworth and well worth it. We had two iced Americanos which were okay but could have been a little stronger, still nice as it was hot and humid. We also ordered two breakfast sandwiches and I think it isn't hyperbole to say that it was the breakfast sandwich I have ever had. It was a beautifully toasted sesame bagel with bacon, lots of well cooked, high quality bacon, cheese onions and some homemade chutney style jam. It was so so good. Amazing. The interior is fun and cozy. Definitely a good place to go if you need to rest your legs.

Toslow is my go-to for a vegan breakfast and the hands-down best coffee I've had in St John's. The groovy vibe of local crowd hangout, Nanny's basement, and childhood summers at the cabin makes this place cool and inviting. The location on Duckworth Street, the harbour views from the upstairs picture window, and the gracious and engaging staff make this place, for me at least, a must-stop when in St. John's. And carnivores rest easy, the menu has you covered. We had the vegan Griddle sandwich made from scrambled tofu and vegan sausage and cheese, wholly caramelized in maple syrup. And the BLT on housemade focaccia. And, you guessed it, the BEST coffee! Five stars all around.

I live very close to this location so I’ve been around for the last 4 years, it’s the closest coffee shop to my yoga studio so I go there maybe once a week. However in the 4 years I’ve been around I never once had a friendly encounter with the staff. I love baked goods and coffee so I go in there a lot riddled with anxiety. The are heavy on the warm pink with kitties everywhere is virtue signalling since there isn’t a friendly innocent environment at all. Unless you’re part of the dt scene, punk or maybe if you walk in with a dt skater boys they will finally acknowledge you. When they want you to leave they just blast some annoying music to clear it out or let you know they’re closing time before you sit down. It’s a shame the staff hate themselves as much as they do because this would be “ the “ coffee shop in downtown. All of my friends noticed this, and the only people who have a good experience with their staff are the people who are friends with them or when they’re too busy making lattes they have no time to be nasty. If you’re a single women or empathetic being it’s never worth it. Night time staff are a little better...

I’ll start with saying that I think Toslow has a lot of great ideas (Louisiana food, movie showings, etc) but I find their execution in the simpler tasks are a bit lacking.

The coffee has always been great every time I’ve visited. What I mean by the execution lacking is:

The first time I went, it took quite a long time to receive my latte. We were the only ones being served at the time which is why I was surprised and thought it was worth mentioning. This was a few months back.

The second time, which was just a few days ago, I ordered an iced vanilla latte. The person working there informed me they were out of cold lids or cups and told me they’d put it in a standard cup for a warm drink but reassured me that they knew the drink was iced. When she got done making the drinks she handed me to hot vanilla lattes.

I don’t think either or these points should dissuade anyone from visiting, but I do think that if they can figure out how to execute just a bit better, this would be a stellar...

This is my buddy and I's favorite place for dinner - we try to go every month and we're never disappointed. The dinner menu rotates; they post that weekends menu on their Instagram every week, and its always unique, flavourful, creative, and masterfully plated. Despite the small menu on each rotation (there's usually 5-6 dishes to choose from each weekend), there are almost always at least two vegetarian options (which are proper, filling, delicious meals not just salads like a lot of places). For the food quality, the price is very reasonable. I've also been there for breakfast sandwiches and they've been divine. Plus, its quality food in an unassuming, quirky, fun environment. My only "negative" comment is expect to wait a bit longer than usual for food: they're...
