Northern Delight, Gunners Cove, en route to L'Anse Aux Medows.
Fogiven for looking plain we went in for great simple Nl food. Had peppered lemon cod. Ok. Nothing special. Fish lightly cooked and beautiful home fries. No lemon on fhe fish. DIY lemon cod? Tinned peas, cold carrots and terrible coleslaw like any classic Nl cuisine, so very traditional.
Service was poor. We turned up at 7.30, oblivious that the kitchen closed at 7.30. We hovered about while mrs was talking, she didn't make contact so we sat down on our own, as the sign said. Got the impression something was up off the bat. Older lady was very nice, gave us menus and did well at hiding her displeasure, which never the less cut through. Not the black haired Mrs who's table perhaps we belonged to, made it obvious that walking in was a mistake, which upset my wife. Got up to get sauces etc. Older Mrs helped. I apologised gor asking, she said nothing. Asked for desrert. No. Kitchen was closed. Wife wanted cold pie but daren't ask. Got told kitchen was closed. Went to pay and black hair Mrs took all my change and put it straight in the tip jar! Like a 'thats for coming in when we were closed' charge or something! She looked straight at me. I just shrugged and went but ghaought it was really cheeky! Especially after being like that. Errr tips are for good service! At my descretion! You give me change and I then tip if i want.
Plenty of choice in both directions. Dont waste precious holiday time eating there or stress writing poor reviews so others dont make the same mistake. Food was ok and 'traditional' but felt like i was a hassle and an obvious inconvenience. Give your best to every customer in the future with the modern age of unbias, and internationally...
Read moreI am a patient person. The restaurant was busy and there were only a couple of people doing front of house. BUT there are some very simple things any restaurant owner should know: first, when people come in the door, acknowledge them. Not meeting people’s eyes or letting them know it’ll be a couple of minutes until they’re seated is just rude. Second, get the menus to the table at the same time people are seated. Seems like restaurant 101 to me. Next tell them about the special and ask if they want drinks. Don’t leave them sitting for 30 minutes before asking them what they want. Also, make note of which tables are seated in what order. Be sure to take the orders in that order. Again, restaurant 101. If the kitchen is backed up, tell your tables that! People are forgiving! Don’t just avoid their eyes. Not cool! Waiting for an hour for an appetizer is FAR too long. We finally had to ask about our meals. In the meantime people who were seated after us had already eaten and left. What the heck?! And no communication from the wait staff! Again, not cool. After I asked, then finally we got our apps and then, two minutes later, we got our mains. Sigh. Again, I am a patient person, but the service in this place was abysmal. The food was okay but they’ve got to get their act together with respect to the service and the kitchen. Don’t go if you have...
Read moreNot sure what to think about previous reviews. Is this the same restaurant? Did the cook recently quit? We arrived at 615 pm on a Monday and other patrons were just leaving. We were alone in the restaurant. Of 6 orders, 2 were incorrect. Apparently the Appy basket and the Entree combo were too alike for the staff to distinguish them as being different meals (one with pizza rolls, mozzarella sticks etc and the other had scallops, shrimp and cod). We asked about the $2 up charge for home fries, as some did not want French fries. We were told that the home fries were fresh cut and chunkier. No. The McCain frozen fries came out of a bag like almost everything else. The battered cod was decent, perhaps it was hand battered. Best on The Rock??? Not a chance. My friend had pork chops and one was cooked so dry that he had difficulty cutting it. The mistaken Appy baskets had burnt pizza rolls and cheese balls. The waitress did note that ( then why were they served?) and the kitchen provided replacements. Yes, price point is low but unless you are looking for deep fryer food I would take the previous reviews with a grain of The Rock salt. I was embarrassed to have taken my friends there based on...
