Had an exciting night planned out that I had been looking forward to for several weeks. Two tickets to Jann Arden concert at Windspear and dinner reservations at Sorrentions for 600pm. I arrived and was seated at a table almost right beside the front window across from the library which was a great location to be able to see my friend arrive! I was given water and ordered the lobster croquettes to start with. When my friend arrived we decided we would just have water instead of a drink as we were going to purchase a drink at the venue. We asked our male waiter about the beef carpaccio versus an assortment of bruschetta because we wanted something light. Our waiter was not able to provide us any additional information. When asked if he thought that would be enough food for two he simply replied the dishes were for one person. We ordered the beef carpaccio with the lobster croquettes and he asked if we would like some bread which we said yes. The bread came without any butter and then 5 mins later the dish with olive oil and herbs was presented but we had almost finished the bread. The lobster croquettes came three on the plate they looked nice but tasted like salmon flavoured fish cakes I have purchased at Costco and could not detect any lobster and were barely warm. The beef carpaccio was so disappointing. I have had this dish at the Cactus club and is one of my favourite dishes but this dish was tasteless. The waiter came at the end of the meal to top up our water which my friend has already finished part way through her meal and it just added to our disappointment. We said nothing paid the bill with a tip and left for the concert. I am so sad this whole experience turned out the way it did. I have eaten at other Sorrentinos and have always had a great meal! This experience has left a negative impression on me and will not be inclined to recommend this location in the future. Edmonton is a fantastic foodie city as I tell all my friends that come to visit but sadly this Sorrentinos is falling short of...
Read moreWe’ve been to Sorrentino’s many times over the years — it’s always been decent, never amazing, but never terrible either. After our recent visit to the Stony plain location, though, it’ll be a while before we return.
I called ahead to ask how busy they were, but instead of answering, the gentleman on the phone (the same host that used to seat us at their St. Albert location 10-15 years ago) brushed me off and told me to “just make a reservation.” His arrogant attitude has always rubbed us the wrong way, but we can get past it since it's a 5-second interaction.
The restaurant itself was clean, with a nice atmosphere and modern décor. We waited about 10 minutes for water and drink orders. Our server recommended the risotto cheese balls and bruschetta. Unfortunately, both appetizers were disappointing — bland bruschetta and risotto balls frozen in the middle.
It took some time to track down our server. When our mains arrived, the short ribs were tasty but lukewarm. The bolognese pasta for our son? Inedible — tasted spoiled. We quietly let the staff know. No apology, no concern — just a dismissive offer to replace it, as if it was a matter of preference.
The replacement meal took so long, my husband and I were finished before our son even started eating. Service remained slow, coffee came out overfilled and 20 minutes late. No apology, no acknowledgment, even after the issues were clear.
We ate out to save time and avoid the hassle at home — unfortunately, it ended up being more hassle than it was worth. Between the poor service, spoiled food, and unprofessional attitude, we’ll be looking elsewhere for...
Read moreThis is a weird review to write, becuse I genuinely did enjoy my meal, and the experience as a whole at Sorrentinos. The service was great, the atmosphere was great, the appetizers were great, but I had some issues with the main and cocktails.
I had the risotto special, a parmesan risotto with spare ribs and chili sauce, which was tasty and a fantastic special, on paper. The issue I had with it was that the ribs and the chili sauce were obviously not made in house, and were likely just basic off-the-shelf items from Sysco or GFS. I have no problem in general with restaurants using products from these companies, but the vibe that the sorrentinos group leans on is that they are high quality, higher end Italian and Mediterranean cuisine, which by definition requires fresh and high quality ingredients. Everyone else's food looked like it was made with a lot more care and attention than my special. I have no choice but to wonder how much of the menu comes in frozen and is reheated.
My cocktail also seemed to be a bit of a cop-out. I had the cherry old fashioned, which uses a bit of cherry syrup in place of a maraschino cherry. It was tasty, and better than many other old fashioneds I've tried, but using cherry syrup instead of demerara sugar and an actual cherry is just a sign of laziness...
