The new restaurant in downtown Parry Sound is beautiful. Built by hometown Craftspeople at Rose Point Construction you will be fed and full and back in your car in no time. The O.G. Henry's on Frying Pan is something else. 45 minutes by Georgian Bay Water Taxi through the most Canadian scenery this side of Banff brings you to a series of docks tucked out of the wind on Frying Pan, the largest island in the 30,000 Island San Souci archipelago. Generations of guests have been dazzle by East Coast charm here on the East side of the Great Lakes baby brother. We covered our eyes and ignored the temptation offered by the waterfront ice cream store. Climbing towards the subtle low sprawling buildings on the hill we started to feel the chatter and laughter from the indoor and outdoor tables. From our corner we saw, in no particular order- a Cottage Air seaplane taxiing out, a 100 year old cottage on the opposite shore, Great Loop yachts moored for the night. Dogs roaming their dedicated Park. Order the Pickerel and if you balk at the price-- shake your head. You just got more food than you can eat (3 pieces of fish, fries, coleslaw and beans far from the nearest port). Moor nearby in Echo Bay. Hike Wreck Island. You aren't hitting your local Burger King ( Praise be the Whopper).. you are crossing off a Bucket list item or...
Read moreI've since been a couple times under new management and the food was not good, fish was Cooked but batter was wet and soggy, calamari is chewing gum and the rice in the shrimp bowl is wet and soggy with no flavouring. The menu was shorter but nothing fresh, I've been eating pickerel my whole life and it tasted like bass so I don't believe it was pickerel, $30+ just for frozen fish and chips. The Cole slaw and the cheesy garlic bread were the only good things, however $15 for cheese bread is too much. The staff seam nice but the staff I spoke to about the food became defensive and didn't offer replacement or to not be charged. They have a good beer selection and a cute shop but in the end we go to Henrys for the food nothing more. The owner seemed a bit rude and off. I've heard 'rumors' from people that they underpay and overwork their staff (from what I've heard if it's not chedules even if they work it they don't get paid for any overtime or late nights, I hope this isn't true), I wouldn't be surprised, the owner seemed overly friendly to the (all female) wait staff. Nothing is fresh and unfortunately I won't be visiting again unless there's a change of management. Also there can be up to a 2hr wait-list and they stop seating early and taking people for waitlists on busy days. No...
Read moreAwesome Service/Atmosphere but the Pickerel Dinner is no where near as good as in the past. We have been going to Henry’s every year for many years (2 hours return from our cottage). Based on the Fish and Chips they prepare, I don’t think we will invest the time and money again (gas down and back probably as much as the food).
In the past, the Fish was lightly battered and very tender and light when you eat it. It was cooked so the batter was light in colour and the fish inside was soft and delicious. Nowadays, the batter seems a lot thicker, it’s cooked dark in colour and the fish inside is way over cooked so it is tough. I have been there 3 times since the new owners have taken over and this fish is always the same. I hate to write a negative review because I love this place but unfortunately the fish has gone downhill from the past. Everyone I know has the same opinion on the fish so we wish they would go back to the previous cooking methods. It would be great if this old batter was an option. I bet it would become standard fairly quickly.
The service and the facilities at the restaurant are far better than in the past. I think the new owners have done a great job but have missed the boat on the fish. Please fix this as I love coming to Henry’s and want...
