The shrimps plate was nice, as well as all side dishes. The cod which was pre-dried and salted (and then re-hydrated plus kind of boiled?) was not to my taste. Wish they have explained it was not per se a grilled cod as it was written in the menu. Prices are exaggerated for the local standards. The speed is ridiculous. We came some time before a huge group of American tourists and we got served our food when they were finishing eating. We waited for about 45min for our food and only after we pushed them a few times to bring at least the french fries for the child, they decided to bring some food out. This is a tourist trap place and all the drivers/guides eat for free when you bring in your group of tourists. Nothing bad about it if the speed of the food and the PRIORITY of who gets food first were right. The price of 13 euros for a portion of the re-hydrated dry and salted cod was exaggerated. The service was neutral. They do not speak English, but when you approach them in Spanish they are not very happy. The menu was translated into English and French, NOT Spanish - reading through the comments I see that Spanish guests have been there. The bill was handwritten- wonder why? Payment by card was done in a separate room not near the tables. I paid 40 euros for a bottle of water, a coke, “grilled” cod, shrimps and french fries. The mains came with salads/boiled veggies. As said only the garnishes were nice and the shrimps. The driver got the dish of the day a chicken with a garnish which looked better than their overpriced dishes on their menu. The tables were dirty when we came and the waiters just threw the menus on the too of the dirt. She only cleaned the table once I insisted on it. The location of this restaurant is off the beaten path and I see a lot of commission for each driver bringing tourists there. I have been in similar restaurants in the Caribbean where the driver eats for free if you bring guests, however, the food there was readily available (buffet) and delicious. And the service was more than polite. And the driver has told us in advance that this place is operating on this principle (free food for the driver)…beware of the many homeless dogs outside the restaurant, as well as the countless flies roaming...
Read moreWhat a bummer! I have visited Calhau - small fishing village, to try freshly caught fish. Unfortunately there was only one place available - restaurant ‚Hamburg’. I was quite surprised to see this restaurant’s name in beautiful island S.Vicience but since there was no other option I’ve decided to try it. I’ve ordered grilled ‚garopa’ fish. The fish was not fresh for sure, I could still experience how fresh it was after returning home and having stomach issues. I don’t know if that was my bad luck or … Hamburg is not ideal place to eat. It is not the first time I eat fish/food in CV but for sure will never return to this place nor recommend it to friends. Prices are very high as for CV standards (few days before I had a grilled fish for 400 cve and was much much better).
ONE RULE THAT APPLIES FOR PLACES LIKE CV - eat with the locals, they know the best where wood...
Read moreFor me it's a 5! At first we sat down and thought prices were a little high for the dishes. Then we thought there's nowhere else to eat anyway. When we saw what was coming out of the kitchen we were happily surprised. Big fat platters with lots of veg/salad, great oven fries and fresh fish and seafruit. It's a fishers' village and they have access to the fresh produce of best quality. I had a few wine glasses plus coffee, my girlfriend had juice, and it all came suprisingly cheap on the tab. Waitresses seem a little overwhelmed at times, but they do the job. I recommend because it's very good and if you happen to visit Calhau you'll discover it's pretty empty and there's not many food options. So go ahead and indulge! (Why it's called Hamburg though is a complete...
