It was an absolute treat to visit the Cafe Marquesina coffee plantation. Even though we did not book in advance we were warmly welcomed, were invited to sample a coffee and we could book a tour for the next day.
It is a family run business and the love for coffee speaks from every detail and the enthusiasm of the owners in explaining how they run their farm. They even arranged an interpreter for us, because our Spanish is not the best.
In a four-hour tour you get to taste different preparations of their coffee, you get an extensive explanation about coffee and it’s origins, you get a tour of the plantation, you get to harvest coffee beans yourself, and they show you all the steps in the processing of of the fresh coffee beans to roasted coffee. To top it all off, you are treated on a delicious traditional lunch. We had a lot of fun and the hospitality at Cafe Marquesina is more than excellent. Plus, the whole coffee process from planting to harvest was demonstrated, with a chance to pick coffee beans ourselves... Having had a garden growing up, this was a secret thrill: I loved being able to harvest coffee beans on the plantation.
