My wife and I stayed for two nights. The room is great, with nice beds and a good shower with hot water. Food is all good with vegetarian option, and as there are no restaurants in San Andres we ate here for all meals - do ask when they are closing for the night though if you plan to eat there. The WiFi was fine in the restaurant but did not reach the rooms. There was also no phone signal, so we had no internet in the evenings. Everything is cash only, including the 65,000 peso per person entry to the Archeological Park so be sure to bring enough. The 1030 bus from Popayan no longer goes to San Andres, and there is no direct bus back either so be prepared to have to wing the last part of the journey - we got a lift with some locals in their car as the public transport jeeps are rammed full so it's hard to get on with luggage. On the way back we shared a car all the way from San Andreas to Popayan which was great, arranged by La Portada. Note there were a lot of mosquitos in the area, dress in long clothing and use mosquito repellent. The archeological park consists of two walking loops which can be done as part of a long day of hiking (start at 8am) or you can miss one of the sites (El aguacate) in which case the rest can be done in about 5-6 hours and you can stop in San Andres for lunch during the hike. I would recommend using Maps Me with downloaded offline map for the hiking to ensure you are on the...
Read moreIt is a happy occurance when the one viable place to stay in a remote village is also a good place to stay. San Andres de Pisimbala is a rustic spot. A chiva calls in a few times a day. There is an ancient white washed and thatched chapel and you start to hear some of the language of the Nasa indigenous people. At dawn I could hear a noisy dual outside my window between the older and younger rooster.||||La Portada consists of an accommodation block with very simple, bare and clean rooms, across the road from the restaurant of the same name, run by the same team of Leo and Eva. Service is warm and friendly. My vegetarian preferences were understood and accommodated. Some excellent natural fruit juices complimented supper and the arepas, eggs and coffee were good for breakfast. In fact I think the restaurant is the main attraction here. You can see it is the "go to" spot attracting local take away custom and guests from other accommodations. ||||There is a deep rustic charm in the village. There are astonishing ancient tombs and spectacular hiking routes in the surrounding countryside. La Portada is somehow an essential, intangible and integral part of the...
Read moreI have visited many parts of the world always in search of mystical and unique experiences. I have got to say that Tierradentro did not let me down. I had NO idea that this area had one of the few pyramids in Colombia. It is a shame that many of the locals do not appreciate this place as much as the foreigners do. I really want to thank Leonardo (the owner) for his attention. The rooms were fabulous (they had hot water) and he always received us with a hot meal after our long day hikes. The room was very clean, quiet, and he made sure we had all the information we needed. I have to warn you, "La Portada" is the ONLY restaurant in town so this is definitely a good choice. The prices are very fair and it is located in a strategic location so I couldn't recommend it more. Thank you "La Portada" and "San Andrés de Pisambalá" for this incredible experience! Only downside was not being able to stay...
