Soda Diana — Restaurant in Ángeles

This tiny soda sits at the north end of a bunch of sodas a few kilometers north of that ubiquitous tourist dive Mi Rancho, If you want to try typical Costa Rican food that doesn't make you say "so what?", this is the place.

It's a clean, tidy, and above all else cheerful place tended by six or so Ticas who work behind the counter and on the floor. Although it is on the tourist route to Arenal the clientele are almost exclusively Tico and local. I was told about Soda Diana by a gringa friend, but I have never seen another gringo there.

The food is the normal Costa Rican soda fare, but raised to a very high level. My first meal there consisted of gallo pinto, fried sweet plantains, tongue in salsa, and lovely cafe con leche. The bill was 2,200 colones, or a hair over four dollars. The casado with pork chop, many sides, and passion fruit in water ran 3,500 and I could barely finish it. They change up dishes on a daily basis, so you need not eat the same meal twice in a row.

I almost forgot that the tortillas are made fresh on the spot to meet demand, patted out by hand and cooked on a hot pan before your eyes, by a woman who works with incredible efficiency while maintaining a steady banter with her fellow workers and customers alike.

Soda Diana es un restaurante típico costarricense que cuenta con una maravillosa vista panorámica desde su balcón, el cual es ideal para disfrutar de una buena comida mientras se aprecia la belleza de los alrededores. Al ingresar, nos recibió una mesera sumamente amable que nos ofreció un servicio excepcional durante toda nuestra visita.

Fuimos con amigos y compañeros y cada uno pidió algo diferente, yo elegí el clásico emparedado de carne, el cual venía acompañado de lechuga fresca. La carne estaba perfectamente cocida y sazonada, lo que le dio un sabor inigualable. Además, el pan estaba recién horneado, lo que le dio una textura suave y esponjosa.

Mis amigos pidieron el gallo pinto, el plato más icónico de la comida costarricense. Este platillo no defraudó en absoluto, el arroz y los frijoles estaban perfectamente mezclados y sazonados con las especias tradicionales. La porción era abundante y venía acompañado de plátanos maduros y tortillas recién hechas.

Como postre, pedí un chocolate caliente, que resultó ser una deliciosa sorpresa. El chocolate era denso y cremoso, con el balance perfecto entre dulce y amargo. Definitivamente es uno de los mejores chocolates que he probado.

En general, Soda Diana ofrece una experiencia culinaria auténtica y memorable, y su balcón panorámico la convierte en una opción única, a pesar de la espesa niebla, la vista era asombrosa. La atención de la mesera fue excepcional, haciendo que nuestra visita sea aún más agradable.
