Big Mama's Kitchen is the best food we had our entire trip in Costa Rica. In a place saturated with lazy, frozen, and unenthusiastic cuisine, Big Mama cooks with heart, soul, and a deep love and passion for filling the bellies of anyone lucky enough to wander into her charming and loving abode.
Me and my girlfriend dined here for lunch and while we both aren't great at speaking Spanish, Big Mama was skillfully adept at speaking in a way that we would understand. We ordered what she recommended to us which was a plate for me, 2 lemonades and something small for my girlfriend.
I then realized I didn't have any cash and went over to tell her to wait while we run to the atm and she said "no. Primero comer, atm despues". She wouldn't let us leave. Feeling guilty we accepted.
Mama then brought out a small but delicious ceviche type appetizer (on the house) and then our plates. (Both massive). I'll let the picture speak for itself because I won't be able to do it justice but just know that every morsel was packed with fresh and moist meat and layered flavor that only a seasoned pro with a lifetime of skill and passion for food could create.
Long story short we came back with the money, gave more than we were charged of course, and then got to meet Victor, Mama's husband, who gave me a shot and the location of a secret local destination that we went to and enjoyed and ended up coming back for dessert (that she wouldn't accept payment for) which wasn't ready at the time and got to hangout with them for awhile later. Both Victor and Big Mama are a treasure and the food is a blessing from an angel. I cannot recommend Big...
Read moreI'm updating this review: I've traveled the world, I've been surrounded by world class food, nothing compares to Miss Darlene's food. Her and her husband are such good, genuine people. Her food is made with all the love in her heart. Cooking is her passion.
If you're vegetarian or vegan, please come in and let her know what you don't eat. She's very accommodating! Costa Rica doesn't exactly have a grasp of the different kinds of vegetarians, pescaterians or stuff like that. If you don't eat eggs or dairy, say it!
It says on the signs, she makes traditional costa Rican foods, this isn't some hotel or commercial dining experience. This is THE REAL COSTA RICA and she has the BEST FOOD IN THE WORLD. This place feels like home to me. Home cooked meals. What an absolute delight. Plus, they really know how to make some good drinks!
This was the highlight of our week long trip to Costa Rica. Vincente was the life of the party here. Miss Darlene could THROW DOWN AND COOOOK. The food was amazing and big portions. It was relaxed and fun. Just wow....
Read moreThis is typically not a place that I would stop. I wouldn't say that I'm bougie, but I'm super particular. I would not have had the opportunity to have authentic Costa Rican food had we not stopped here and had no other option. Very glad we did stop. Service was good, food was good. Please stop for breakfast, there is no menu, which is another reason that I typically would have got up and just left. My kids don't eat but the same thing over and over, and I like to know exactly what I'm going to get before I get it. Because we had no option I went with it and was pleasantly surprised. Ultimately, we trusted this lady to bring out a platter of food that we had no idea what was going to be on it. She did not speak English and I only speak a little bit of Spanish lol. I literally got there and said abierto, and that was almost the extent of what I could understand lol. For the six of us...
