David, the owner, is a fifty-something transplant from Madrid, Spain 🇪🇸. He brought with him the vivacious spirit of the capital culture, the culture of siestas and bar-hopping that Madrid is famous for the world over. He created an inconspicuous, almost hidden from view, rustic place. Simple, yet inviting, well-integrated with the luscious shrubbery, it sits just off a steadily winding road to Cirri/Lourdes in Naranjo County. This place is relatively new and is easy to miss. Perhaps, with a little more time, David would be well served by promoting his place better.
A few scattered tables and benches accompanied by their respective beach-size umbrellas are unpretentious yet blissfully warm. It's not all outdoors: this little gem of a place has a small dining room, adorned with curtains with whimsical suns and moons, all yellow with red, just like the Spanish flag. The walls are dotted with medium-deep pans with red handles, some of which are smooth-surfaced, some characteristically pock-marked. These pans are called "paelleras," the proper vehicles to cook a Spanish national treasure.
I've had a couple of dishes at David's place. To name a few: hummus, spanish-style mushrooms, delicious and rich Manchego cheese cubes immersed in flavored olive oil, Galician-style octopus, the famous Catalán papas bravas, and of course, paella valenciana. Out of all these, I would heartily recommend everything except paella. For whatever reason, David's paella is kind of bland, a bit watery for my taste, and is lacking the main spice, the saffron.
The wine list is really good. It has a bright Rioja selection, moody Tempranillos, bull-blood Malagas, and Jerez-de-la-Frontera. In other words, there is enough variety to satisfy many...
