We stayed 4 nights half board at Pension Tonci. The location, our hosts, chatting to people from all over the world at dinner and on the beach, and the lovely homemade food made for a intimate and authentic Croatian experience. The food was simple (lots of freshly caught fish on the menu) but our kids soon good stuck in once they realised they really couldn’t order sausages and chips, and they particularly enjoyed the soups. I loved that you were encouraged to wander around the garden during the day and help yourself to tomatoes and figs straight from the tree.||||There are only 6 rooms so it really is boutique - a maximum of 16 guests? Our room was a bit small for the 4 of us (2 adults, 2 kids 10 & 12) but we had use of a hammock just outside and the kids spent most of the day at the private beach anyway. I was worried about having no air-conditioning initially but there is a powerful fan and the room opened out onto a shaded balcony so it stayed nice and cool all day. Bring mosquito spray and a plug in for the room although the bites are not that irritating luckily.||||There is good snorkelling in the bay (you can borrow water shoes or flippers but bring own mask)and the opportunity to go early morning fishing and borrow kayaks. ||Also recommended is the excellent wine tasting place next door where we enjoyed both the wines and a delicious lunch of bbq fish, zucchini fritters...

Wow, this is a very special place. A feast for all the senses. Packed full of handcrafted art and sculptures, the garden and living areas have been woven together to create quite the impact. And then there is the food and wine! ||Most of what we ate and drank had been grown in the surrounding fields and vineyards or sourced locally / fished that morning. This is a true family run business which has developed through 3 generations led today by Grand daughter Perina. ||The whole family speak Croatian, German, English and Italian and everyone is made to feel at home. ||We stayed for 3 nights, full board one day, half board the other. During our daytime adventures of exploring the island it was quite the treat to periodically return to the restaurant and be treated with delicious seafood, fresh fruit, veggies and home made desert. ||From a logistics point of view, things to note and consider. || There are no roads so it's all about walking| It took us 50 mins to walk to the busier port and beaches of Palmizana | There are loads of little swimming bays you can visit along the way| Our room was beautiful, clean and relatively cool but is basic and so does not include things like air con, mini fridge or hair dryer| Taxi boats from Hvar are between...

This is a strange place in a lovely location. The views from the tables at the restaurant over the vineyard are absolutely beautiful. However we found the whole experience a bit unsettling. The owner has a strange sense of humour and a few times in the meal just came and sat at our table without saying a word. They also have a clear hierarchy with their staff which was disappointing - there are staff who clear the plates but can't take an order or tell you about the food, and then there are the staff who can take your order and tell you about the food. Perhaps this doesn't seem like a big deal, but at most restaurants in this part of Europe (especially ones that require a booking) all the staff serving are equal and they can all take your orders and tell you about the food. The food was ok. Definitely not the best we've had, but not the worst either.

We live in NYC and often eat delicious, fresh food by world-renowned, talented chefs. FisherMan’s house is different. We were seated in the garden, surrounded by the figs, olives, grapes, and peppers that make up the beautiful dishes you eat. The fish is special. They catch it in the very waters you see on your way in, and then you enjoy it on your beautifully prepared plate within hours. The service is thoughtful, organized, and generous, as the locals who work here understand the importance of each ingredient, and each patron’s experience. This is a very special restaurant, we walked an hour from Palmanzana to get here. And it was worth every step.

If you are looking for a hidden gem, here you go. We took a buoy in that bay after a nice sail today at 15kt wind from the right direction. Called the owner, and he opened the restaurant for us. There is no need for a menue, we took the chefs recommendation of today, grilled fish on wodden fire with grilled vegetables and potatoes. Our appetizer was tuna sashimi, beet root salad with feta. And it was delicious. All fresh natural ingredients from this tiny island. Don't forget your torch, as it gets dark in the night. And there is a 300m walk on a trail through nature to master after dinner. An amazing place with amazing food and amazing people.
