We came to La Casa de Al on a Friday for dinner. We had taken the tourist bus (hop on hop off) to the end of the line and walked about 10-12 minutes to the restaurant. Overall our experience was pretty good, but with some caveats.
Their drinks were quite cheap (although a lot of stuff had run out). We were not given menus, but were told the special of the day was a whole lobster with rice and salad for 1,500 CUP. It was what we wanted and at an affordable price, so we ordered that. I'm guessing they didn't have much else available, which is why they were pushing the lobster. So it's a good thing we were happy with this dish. The food itself was quite good, well seasoned and fresh. The setting was also fantastic - right on the water and the building is interesting to check out.
Looking back, I realize this restaurant is probably better suited and much more popular for lunch than dinner. When we went, which was between 6 - 7 pm, there was only two couples who got drinks and no one else eating. Rather sad honestly. Maybe this was an anomaly because there was some serious flooding in the road which deterred people from coming (we were told taxis didn't want to drive through it). So I'd encourage you to consider that if you're...
Read moreWhat a lovely, hidden gem! This stone building is old, of course, but spacious and beautifully decorated. The menu offers basic dishes, deliciously prepared. Our server was pleasant and attentive. We really enjoyed the music they were playing (Cuban covers of popular music), as well as the attention we received from our two dining companions (what we believe to be a mother cat and her kitten)! The restaurant backs onto the ocean, with access to the terrace from the beach, so after our meal we sat outside, enjoyed the cool night breeze, listened to the waves and watched the moonlight cascade across the water. Romantic and...
Read moreVery bad experience. If you pay in dollars, they calculate the exchange rate as 3 times lower than the official one. The mojito was small and tasteless. The lobster is expensive, tastes like rubber, the worst in Cuba. It seems that Al Capone's involvement is a myth. We couldn't find any information about it anywhere. The building itself looks interesting, but it's not worth going just for that. If you really need to, you can see the building from the beach, you don't have to order...
